ANOTHER RECORD FOR NEW MCLAREN
Last Updated: Thursday, 11 December , 2003, 17:48
The new McLaren MP4-19 claimed its second lap record inside a fortnight in testing on Thursday.
David Coulthard set a new lap record in the car’s first test at Valencia a fortnight ago and Pedro de la Rosa emulated his team-mate in the 19’s latest run-out at Jerez.
De la Rosa was nearly half a second quicker than Renault’s Fernando Alonso in second and a full two seconds ahead of either Ferrari. His lap was a full second quicker than the previous record, set earlier this month by Ralf Schumacher’s Williams.
While it is, of course, far too early to be making predictions about 2004, McLaren must be delighted with the early performance and promise of the new car.
However, the team’s opposition can at least take comfort from the fact that, shortly after its record-breaking run, the car caught fire and stopped out on the track.
Marc Gene was third fastest as Spanish drivers locked out the top three places with Williams team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya fourth. The team also gave a run out to Chinese driver Ho-Pin Tung (see separate story).
Renault were by far the busiest team with Fernando Alonso and Franck Montagny both completing well in excess of 100 laps.
Further down the timesheets, Jaguar new boy Christian Klien did his credibility no harm at all by beating team-mate Mark Webber.
Takuma Sato was faster in the BAR 005 than team-mate Jenson Button in the team’s 2004 concept car while Swiss youngster Neel Jani wrapped up a four-day test for Sauber with 15th spot.
