I don't know if this is in any way related but why do people actually do it in the first place? don't they have anything better to say at all? I can definitely think about other topics to discuss as well but using one person or others as a conversation-starter is just wrong and unethical.

Sure you can say that you shouldn't care, but what else are you gonna do about it? My idea is to try to influence the people to think up of other things to discuss, its really not that hard to attempt, but people are too lazy to try these days.
