Every car you approach for an install demands something different. The shape of the vehicle, its original intended use or the year in which it was made could greatly affect the install direction. Wanting to do something futuristic to an old car, Ground Designs 2000 owner Ivan Tampi went looking for a suitable (and cheap) vehicle. He found it in this 1988 Honda CRX. After dropping a mere $3,000, the car was his to completely redesign.
If You Want My Body...
Tampi's Ground Designs 2000 is widely known as the force behind the Black Widow body kit. For the CRX, Tampi decided to up the ante and went back into R&D, coming up with the Black Widow Special Edition, a brand new wide body kit sure to turn heads. It wasn't that easy though--it took three tries to get the design just right, incorporating ideas from the Porsche Carrera GT, the Cobra and more.
Stick your head under the car and you'll get an eyeful of a sweet chrome Canover air ride suspension from Japan, complete with adjustable dampers. AC Autotech exhaust, titanium muffler, ATR carbon-fiber mirrors, and JDM taillights and roof, pulled from a Japanese junkyard, round out the body mods. House of Kolor Orion Silver paint, applied by Auto Explosion in Gardena, CA, completes the look.
The 5ZR Copse wheels come courtesy of 5Zigen, 18" x 8.5" in the front, 18" x 10" with 1" spacers in the rear. Falken tires (front 275/35/18, rear 235/35/18) keep the CRX on the ground. Rotora big cross-drilled slotted rotors, 4-piston calipers and steel-braided brake lines bring the whole show to a halt.
The CRX is no slouch under the hood either. Actually, that last statement does the car a disservice. The engine, a JDM spec B16A sporting a 5Zigen header, is absolutely stunning. The motor is polished all the way to the tranny.
...And You Think I'm Sexy
Everyone knows it's what inside that counts, right? So take a look at the interior: Cobra seats, custom fiberglass dash (with, yes, Audi TT vents), custom black and gray carbon-fiber-look upholstery by CarCraft, Hot Rod gauges, Ichibahn e-brake handle, Isotta steering wheel and shift knob, Razo pedals... It's a little too much to take in all at once.
So what about that custom dash? Tampi had the brilliant idea to mold a Clarion head unit and 10-inch monitor into the center console. The dash was molded out of fiberglass, painted to match the exterior, and the monitor was laid in flush. A Clarion DVD unit went in below the head unit for the visual entertainment. Two sets of Audiobahn ABC525Q 5 1/4" components went into the factory door locations, front and back, to provide the mids and highs. Additional video for front passengers can be found in the sun visors, thanks to two Audiobahn monitors.
When it came to the rear of the sound system, Tampi states, "The aim was to make it look and sound good." Good indeed. The back of this thing is absolutely incredible. Because of the small space, Tampi had to get creative. After two full days of planning, a fiberglass assembly was custom made to get some shape into the car. Two 10" Audiobahn AW1005Q subwoofers were placed in boxes behind the seats in the middle of the CRX, firing down. Oddly enough, Tampi didn't even have to measure the volume. His years of experience told him how much he would need.
Come On Let Me Know
The first thing you notice when you check out the trunk is all that chrome. Chrome bars snake in and out like biomech tentacles, adding a futuristic touch to the show. The bars hold up three Audiobahn amps: two A8001DQ's for the subs and an A4601Q for the mids and highs. Two Audiobahn AVM150 5-inch monitors float above the subs, while an Audiobahn ACAP301Q 3-farad capacitor sits in the center on the floor. Wiring and distribution was provided by Audiobahn, while four Odyssey batteries keep the power on full.
Tampi's CRX is now in retirement, having won numerous titles, including IAS and several Best in Shows. But Tampi is far from content to rest on his laurels. He's already built a number of new cars, including a high-profile Cobra, with a Lincoln Navigator and an Accord on the way.
Driver Profile
As the owner and chief designer at Ground Designs 2000, Ivan Tampi has single-handedly changed the look of import cars. That's quite a bit of hyperbole, but in this case it happens to be true. His staggeringly
staggeringly popular Black Widow body kit altered the way we think about cars, period. The Black Widow Special Edition, as seen on the CRX, updates that look while retaining the trademark style of the original. Tampi continues to make advancements in body kits, as evidenced by his recent forays into the domestic market.
