Analysis - Ferrari leave rivals reeling
Was Ferrari domination down to Bridgestone edge?
To say that Ferrari sprang a major surprise in Melbourne is an understatement. Everyone knew that the red cars should never be discounted, and that you under-estimate Bridgestone at your peril, but not even Sir Frank Williams could have foreseen that the F2004s would be so utterly dominant. Their crushing superiority left everyone clutching for straws of comfort.

"We got a roasting," a team Williams insider admitted. "But it was all about tyres today. It was just like 2002. Ferrari and Bridgestone did the same thing then, and then we went to Malaysia and finished first and second for Michelin. I think it was mainly a case of Bridgestone providing a more suitable tyre this weekend."
Schumacher himself advised people to wait and see what happened in Malaysia in a fortnight's time before drawing complete conclusions on the way the season is likely to unravel, but for sure there were a lot of people scratching their heads on Sunday evening.
Best of the rest were Renault, and while the R24 is an absolute jewel of a car, adjudged by many to be the best aero package in the paddock, few expected it to be superior to the BMW Williams, which had looked good all through winter testing. Yet on the day Fernando Alonso got more out of his car, tyres and set-up than either Ralf Schumacher or the accident-prone Juan Pablo Montoya, and third place was a fine reward.
You could cut the tension in the Williams camp with a chainsaw after the race, and not just because of the relatively poor performance of the FW26. Senior management figures were seething at yet another first corner contretemps by Montoya, which left him to fight back all afternoon. This is not what either Williams or technical director Patrick Head had in mind, let alone BMW.
Then there was the performance of McLaren. Or rather, the lack of it. The mechanics were going back to their hotels as late as three o'clock some mornings, such was the rate of work on the silver cars throughout the weekend, and a lapped eighth place for David Coulthard is assuredly not what was expected. Ron Dennis tried to put a brave face on things, but there is something approaching crisis at McLaren and you can be sure that steps are being taken in a hurry to rectify things.
"We will fight back and we are confident we can get back on the pace," Dennis said. But how long will it take? On Australian form the Mark 2 version of MP4-19 that he admits is taking shape in the new McLaren Technical Centre in Woking is needed sooner rather than later.
Toyota, too, had nothing to cheer as they were blown off in the race by Jordan Ford. "The good things are that the engine is small, light and has decent power," says technical guru Mike Gascoyne. "The chassis isn't up to much, but there are things we can do and we can do quite a lot with the TF104 package this year. But these things can only come at a certain pace."
One of the few teams that left Australia with their tails up were BAR. Though Jenson Button proved unable to hold on to his initial fourth place after a problem with the refuelling nozzle in his second pit stop, he still finished sixth for three points and the team proved their pace in qualifying when he set the same third fastest time as Montoya's Williams.
"Our target for this year was to challenge the top three teams, and this weekend we have successfully demonstrated that BAR is a force to be reckoned with. Of course, it's early days, but it's a good feeling to leave here with some points on the board."

Australian race a big hit with the fans
GPDA prize winners get to meet the drivers
Three lucky motorsport fans had a money-can’t-buy experience at the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday when they were given a guided tour of the Formula One paddock after winning a new Grand Prix Drivers’ Association competition.
http://www.formula1.com/photos/190x177/sutton/2004/d04aus1474.jpg http://www.formula1.com/photos/90x59/sutton/2004/d04aus1260.jpg http://www.formula1.com/photos/90x59/sutton/2004/d04aus1099.jpg http://www.formula1.com/photos/90x59/sutton/2004/d04aus907.jpg
Gerard Morford-Waite from Tasmania, Peter Murphy from New South Wales and Simone Hayes from Melbourne, each with a guest, spent an hour in the paddock, during which they went behind-the-scenes in the McLaren and Jaguar pit garages.
They also had photo opportunities with the four GPDA directors, six-time world champion Michael Schumacher, local hero Mark Webber, McLaren’s David Coulthard and Renault’s Jarno Trulli, as well as Williams star Juan Pablo Montoya.
“It was the best thing I have ever done,” said Peter Murphy. “Absolutely fascinating,” said Gerard Morford-Waite. “Unbelievable,” said Simone Hayes, before adding: “that Webber’s a bit of a spunk, isn’t he?”
The competition was the first of its kind to be organised by the GPDA. To enter it, the fans were invited to purchase Mark Webber helmet pins in aid of cancer and brain disorder charity Brainwave Australia, with Webber then picking the winners out of a hat after qualifying.
“I’m delighted that the guys seemed to enjoy themselves,” said Webber. “The fans are very important to us drivers and I hope that this is the first of several such competitions during the course of the year.”
The Australian Grand Prix has always been a major hit with race fans, and the 2004 event was no exception, with well over 350,000 people enjoying the opening round of the new season.
On Thursday 51,400 spectators flocked into Albert Park. The Friday figure of 81,500 was 500 up on 2003, prompting organiser Ron Walker to say that the race had "a fantastic buzz - and we've got the two big days to go."
On Saturday the crowd figure reached 106,500, climbing to 121,500 on raceday, giving an impressive four-day total of 360,900.

Ferrari unstoppable in Melbourne
Schumacher and Barrichello show the pack the way
2004 has started as 2003 finished, with another brilliant performance from the Ferrari team in general, and six-times world campion Michael Schumacher in particular.
http://www.formula1.com/photos/190x177/sutton/2004/d04aus1303.jpg http://www.formula1.com/photos/90x59/sutton/2004/d04aus1314.jpg http://www.formula1.com/photos/90x59/sutton/2004/d04aus1300.jpg http://www.formula1.com/photos/90x59/sutton/2004/d04aus1317.jpg http://www.formula1.com/photos/90x59/sutton/2004/d04aus1319.jpg
In fact it was shades of 2002 for the Italian squad in Melbourne, as Schumacher and team mate Rubens Barrichello roared away from their opposition and indulged in a race of their own. At one stage the two F2004s were less than two seconds apart, after the first pit stops on the 11th (Barrichello) and 12th (Schumacher) laps, and by lap 18 the gap was 0.9s, but thereafter Schumacher was able to gradually pull away again, and brake problems for Barrichello settled the issue once and for all.
"It was a great race for me, for Ferrari and for Bridgestone," Schumacher said, "and the perfect way to start the new championship campaign."
But not if you were driving a different marque. A machismo outbraking duel between fast-starting Fernando Alonso in the Renault and Williams’ Juan Pablo Montoya saw the Spaniard snatch a third place he was not to lose (except during pit stops), while the Colombian driver eroded his credibility within the team by running wide on the grass on the outside of Turn One and dropping to seventh place as Schumacher and Barrichello led Alonso, BAR’s Jenson Button, equally fast-starting Jarno Trulli in the Renault and the second Williams of Ralf Schumacher round the first lap.
As the Ferraris pulled away, Alonso settled into lonely pursuit. Button fell further back, but successfully defended fourth place initially from Ralf Schumacher as Montoya fought his way on to Trulli's tail. Eventually the frustrated Colombian made it by on the 24th lap and set off after is team mate.
Button was able to hold on to fourth placed after his first pit stop on lap 11, but after his second on lap 26 he fell behind Ralf, and soon dropped away, Sure enough, Montoya came thirsting after him, and as they came up to lap rookie Giorgio Pantano in the Jordan on lap 38 Montoya was able to muscle past. Button momentarily tried to sit it out with him, but he was on the outside and was run slightly on to the grass, settling the issue once and for all.
Thus the Williams duo followed Alonso home for fourth and fifth places, with Button easily clear of Trulli for sixth.
The final point fell to a lapped David Coulthard, who adopted a two-stop strategy instead of the majority's three. He made a better start than McLaren team mate Kimi Raikkonen, who passed Felipe Massa's Sauber on the opening lap but could not shake off the Brazilian. The two enjoyed a close fight until Massa outfoxed Raikkonen under braking on lap 10. The Finn, however, was suffering from an engine problem associated with a defective water pump, and when the V10 seized that lap he spun into retirement.
McLaren were not the only team to face disappointment. Mark Webber was running with the Williams drivers early on in his Jaguar, but dropped out on lap 30 with loss of two gears. Nick Heidfeld drove strongly in the Jordan to hold off Giancarlo Fisichella's Sauber for many laps, and was headed for 12th place when his car stopped just beyond the pits after its final; stop on lap 43. BAR’s Takuma Sato survived a couple of off-track excursions to finish ninth just out of the points, while both Toyotas had poor races and finished only 12th and 13th. Christian Klien, in 11th slot, was the leading rookie, with Pantano 14th and the final finisher.
"We seemed to have an advantage today," Schumacher said with his usual understatement. "But you should not read too much into the situation at this early stage of the season. It could be a different situation in Malaysia in two weeks', as it was in 2002, so we should wait until then. If we are still as far ahead then, well, it would look good for us!"
