CAMS undertakes ground breaking project in Bahrain

A team of eight CAMS trainers returned from Bahrain on Monday after completing training sessions for 45 officials who have been appointed to senior positions at the inaugural Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix to be held on 4 April 2004.
The CAMS training team was made up of senior officials, each with over 18 years experience at Grand Prix events in Adelaide and Melbourne as well as training experience within CAMS National Officiating Program.
“The involvement in Bahrain has emphasised the opportunity for officials accredited through the National Officiating Program to take advantage of a well defined career path which encompasses motor sport events from club to international competition,” said CAMS’ Chief Executive Officer Dr Rob Nethercote.
Steven Wright, Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, agrees. “Officials at the Australian Formula One Grand Prix are among the best in the world. We are pleased to see this expertise, gathered over the 20 years of modern day Formula One Grand Prix in Australia, benefiting other F1 events around the world.
“It is also fantastic to see international opportunities opening up for those officials who have dedicated so much time to our event. The rewards are richly deserved.”
Training covered instructor-led and practical sessions including assessment of the officials’ performances at a Formula 1 promotional event which was conducted on the King Faisal Highway in Manama.
“The training team were thrilled with the response from the Bahraini officials who attended the courses. They are young and enthusiastic and keen to learn as much as possible prior to their event,” said Nethercote.
Nethercote went on to say that, despite their enthusiasm, there is still a significant amount of work yet to be done to ensure that the Bahrainis meet the high standard required to run a Formula One Grand Prix.
The next phase of the officials’ training in Bahrain includes a shakedown event to be conducted on the new Formula 1 circuit plus operational support leading up to and during the conduct of the 2004 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix.
