but the dash is a bit disappointing, the a/c vents look funny, and are not on the same level driver and passenger side. I'm also not sure about the screen it looks too high and straight, same as the vents they need to have a slight angle.
does it come in manual? or paddle shift is the only available option?
otherwise, everything seems fine

http://a332.g.akamai.net/f/332/936/12h/www.edmunds.com/media/il/lp/2007/1015/news2.jpg

" Most of the specifications aren't expected to be announced until Nissan's Tokyo show press conference on October 24, but today we know that the all-wheel-drive 2009 GT-R will get a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 that produces 473 horsepower and 434 pound-feet of torque. It'll drive all four wheels through a rear-mounted transaxle. The only transmission will be a GR6 dual-clutch six-speed automatic. And of course there will be paddle shifters for your enjoyment — the same leather-wrapped aluminum paddle shifters as Nissan uses in the G35 sedan."

I think that Nissan did this on purpose for more after market products to come all around the place which would reel the customers into buying this GTR. As MOST modern cars won't look as beautiful as the early model sport cars with a proper bodykit and bits and pieces over here and there.

FIRST DRIVE: 2009 Nissan GT-R
Grit yer teeth and say GT-RRRRRRRR

Yes, it lives up to all the hype!

The coming Nissan GT-R is a world-class supercar: Top speed of 193 mph, 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, a 473 hp, 433 lb ft twin-turbo V6 mounted in the front and driving all four wheels through a rear-mounted transaxle. Take a breath. Okay, continue. And a dual-clutch six-speed automatic you can operate via paddles on the steering wheel.

After a full day driving it on the Nurburgring, the Autobahn and up and over numerous little German country roads we can easily say this is one car that was not over hyped. It is truly a world-class supercar on par with, if not just ahead of, the iconic Porsche Turbo. (They had a Porsche Turbo on hand, too, and we thought the GT-R felt better tied down.)

But it's one thing to put a license plate on a race car and call it streetable. Chief engineer Kazutoshi Mizuno said the new GT-R was designed and engineered as an all-around, all-season, all-weather car that is comfortable to drive every day, even at normal speeds on a normal day.

During the few minutes we drove at what could be called a "normal pace" that day we'd have to say we agree with him. But given only a few hours at the wheel of this, the most highly anticipated supercar in years, we were only in "normal" mode for very brief spurts. The rest of the time we were at some level between "pushing it" and "hammering on the mutha'."

Our first time behind the wheel was on the A48 autobahn in Germany somewhere out around Koblenz or Koln or some other K-town where the German socialist government had not yet succeeded in adding those awful 120-km-hr speed limits. It was like Bonneville with elevation changes and guardrails. The only limitation out here was aerodynamic. Hence, we were obliged to go all-out whompin' fast the whole time.

Rolling right out of the autobahn rest stop where we rendezvoused with the Japanese engineering support crew, we nailed the throttle to the floor and man did the throttle respond. The 3.8-liter VR38 V6 is "an evolution" of the award-winning VQ engine family. It sits up front, with two of its six cylinders forward of the front axle and four aft. Two bagel-sized IHI turbos sit right at the exhaust manifold for quick response. The 433 lb ft of torque rails across the tach from 3200 to 5200 rpm. Peak 473 hp comes at 6400 revs.

A carbon fiber prop shaft ("Good damping and stiffness") runs back to the transaxle, incorporating the clutch, transmission and transaxle altogether. The shifting is done via a direct, twin-clutch system. One clutch handles the odd gears and another clutch handles the even ones. Shifts take 0.2 seconds. There are BorgWarner triple-cone synchronizers for all gears. Another shaft runs forward from that transaxle to send power to the front wheels. Below 25 mph the torque split is 50/50, above that, under normal driving, the split is 40/60. But it can split up to 2/98 under hard acceleration, which was what we were giving it.

Our car rode on 20-inch wheels wrapped by Bridgestone Potenza RE070s, 255/40 in front and 285/35 rears. Front suspension was upper and lower A-arms and the rear was a five-link.

It's always fun to go from zero to warp factor in a right hand-drive car using a jet-lagged left hand-drive brain, trying not to turn on the windshield wipers when you think you're hitting the turn signal.

The GT-R lists quarter-mile time at 11.7 seconds and entering the Autobahn we had no reason to doubt that. The turbo boost was, as promised, very progressive, with little or no discernable lag, just smooth, even power delivery.

Despite the late-morning hour and the mid-week day, there were still a few cars in the way. When we eased onto the 15.2-inch ventilated cross-drilled Brembo brakes from well into triple-digit speeds the car slowed without drama. But then traffic would clear out and the GT-R resumed its high velocity chase with ease.

There are three settings for the Bilstein Damptronic shocks: R, Sports and Comfort. We went out in Sports.

Top speed is listed at 193 mph but with traffic the best we could do was 176. You wouldn't try that in any country but Germany, where you can usually assume everyone else is paying attention. There was a Japanese engineer riding shotgun over on the left whom we dubbed "Bushido engineer-o" or brave engineer. He thought that was pretty funny.

While the coefficient of drag is an impressive 0.27, more than almost any production car, the GT-R also produces downforce at each axle, something very few production cars can claim.

"Cd is more important than downforce on a G35," said chief designer Hiroshi Hasegawa. "But in the case of the GT-R we have to make downforce."

At 193 mph you might appreciate that philosophy.

The first time we went out, the right front wheel felt just a little out of balance, so we came back in and they changed all four wheels. They're efficient, these guys. After that the car was smooth as well as stable and safe, due in equal parts to the German roadway and the Japanese engineering.

The whole car sits on the new PM platform, PM meaning Prime Midship. It's an evolution of the ubiquitous FM platform that sits underneath everything from 350Zs to crossover SUVs. The PM incorporates what Mizuno-san called a "hybrid superstructure body." There is carbon-injected material in the front end and carbon composite material underneath for aerodynamic downforce. There's even some polypropylene in the body, too. In any case, it's not just another FM variant.

We truly enjoyed the Autobahn experience. This is the perfect car for such a top-speed run-it gives such a sense of control at those speeds that you feel like you could do anything.

Next on our agenda of "anything" were some miles of country road. We were able to drive the GT-R back-to-back with a Porsche Turbo.

"Okay now, please enjoy," said the Nissan technician as we exited the company compound down the street from the Nurburgring.

After "much spirited driving," we can say the Turbo had a good deal more lag and more dive and squat than the GT-R. But once the Porsche got spooled up, achtung, baby. It felt lighter and the steering felt quicker, too. The biggest difference between the two was that the Turbo demanded more of its driver while the GT-R was easier to handle, flatter and more stable. We'd be happy with either one, if you're considering a birthday present or anything.

Next up on this Disneyland of a day was Der Nurburgring. This is what all those teenagers whose parents have not taken away their Playstation access really want to do: drive an actual GT-R around the actual Nurburgring as fast as grip, guts and gasoline allow.

Man-oh-flippin'-man. The real deal is about 100 times more thrilling than any computer simulation, even those with the little plastic steering wheel and feet pedals attached.

This was the new Nurburgring, too. Nissan wasn't foolish enough to turn this small squadron of car writer hacks loose on the narrow, blind, crazy-dangerous Nordschliefe. At the time of our drive there were only three prototype GT-Rs extant in the world, and all the apologizing on Earth wouldn't bring one back if you crunched it.

The new Nurburgring is faster, with wide, sweeping turns bordered by runoff areas so huge that even the most no-talent buffoon could likely stay on the pavement. So we did.

All the Japanese engineers and executives had been telling everyone that there was a 35-mph speed limit in the pits, but in all the excitement we kind of forgot about it and nailed the throttle right out of the parking spot right there in pit lane. The wide, low, squealing run-flat tires laid down long patches of black rubber as we launched past the closed garages, pulling back on the right paddle to shift the rear-mounted dual-clutch six-speed transaxle every time the engine got close to its 7000-rpm redline.

In no time at all we were roaring onto pit-out near the end of the straight and directly into the low, evening sun. By the time we got fully out on the front straight and were shifting up from four to five or so, the sun was directly in front of the GT-R and streaming into the windshield; we were trying to remember if that first right-hander came at this rise or just past it. It was just past it, but we'd already started braking and downshifting, the GR6's "synchro-rev control," which perfectly matched each downshift with a throttle blip much better than we'd ever have been able to match it.

Tiptoeing through the first couple turns to avoid the infamy of the run-off gravel, the car felt perfectly safe and willing. So we hammered it up through the gears down the hill and to the far 180-degree turn and started to feel more confident. By the end of the first lap we were flat out on the front straight, roaring up through all six gears for all it was worth.

Nissan lists lateral g's at 0.99, and we certainly bumped up against that in many a Nurburgring corner.

We only got three full laps and no one was timing us, so you'll just have to assume we set the lap record. Earlier, Mizuno-san had offered some lap times from the Nordschliefe for various cars driven by the German magazine SportAuto. Those times are driver-dependent, track-knowledge-dependent, weather-, traffic- and bunny-crossing-the-track dependent. But Mizuno suggested the GT-R could get anywhere from 7:44 on up, with most laps coming in between 7:55 and 7:58. So he suggested the GT-R's strong suit was that it offered "the best cost per lap time." For whatever that's worth.

The GT-R will be worth somewhere in the low-$70,000 range, which does make it perhaps the best cost per lap. We'll know for sure when it enters U.S. showrooms in May or June. Japan will get first crack at it, we get second and the Europeans, who did such a great job of getting out of our way during our Autobahn drive, will have to get it third.

Nissan GT-R lapped Nurburgring in 7:35 - beats SLR McLaren

So are you sick of the Nissan GT-R coverage yet? Well to bad because we’re not. Motor Trend is now reporting that when the GT-R was lapping the Nurburgring, Nissan engineers recorded the best lap time at 7:35.

Reliable sources told Motor Trend that the Nissan GT-R beat the Porsche 996 GT2, Porsche 977 Turbo and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. The 7:35 time of the Nissan GT-R is one second slower than the Koenigsegg CCR and two seconds slower than the Pagani Zonda F.

Nissan is still at the Nurburgring attempting to beat its own and other lap times. Earlier this morning we reported the official specs on the GT-R. The Nissan GT-R is powered by a 3.8 liter V6 engine that produces 473 horsepower and 434 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 mph takes a quick 3.5 seconds while top speed is 192 mph

As you've said earlier in your prior post. They did not use the Nordschliefe. They used a new circuit on the Nurburgring...Motor Trend said "Reliable sources"..Reliable sources can also be untrustworthy. I wouldn't rely on a magazine until we get OFFICIAL news out of Nissan.

The new Nurburgring is faster, with wide, sweeping turns bordered by runoff areas so huge that even the most no-talent buffoon could likely stay on the pavement. So we did.

Nissan could've used this circuit. Nissan is not talking. They are still quiet. This all could be a big fuss about the timing.

Kings of Japan go head-to-head on pricing: Nissan GT-R vs Lexus IS-F

Earlier this month Lexus officially released the details on its upcoming Lexus IS-F. Powered by a 5.0 liter V8 engine, the rear-wheel-drive Lexus IS-F produces 417 horsepower and will go on sales in Japan this December for 7.66 million which is about $65,742 US Dollars.

According to WindingRoad, Nissan previously said that ”prices in Japan for the Nissan GT-R will start from around ¥7.8 million,” which is about $66,380 US Dollars.

So that’s not much more than the Lexus IS-F. We had official word today that the Nissan GT-R will be powered by a 3.8 liter V6 engine that produces 473 horsepower and 434 lb-ft of torque.

Seeing as prices remain the same, which would more speed hungry drives opt for? Is an extra $638 worth 56 more horsepower that the GT-R has. Not to mention the GT-R already carries the respect of beating the Porsche 911 Turbo around the Nurburgring.

More details next week as Nissan officially unveils the GT-R at the Tokyo Motor Show.

You know the longer you look at the interior, the more you notice that its actually really well thought out, what at first looks like a mess of switches and nob's actually is a easy to use interface for someone who's serious about driving. Reminds me of the Mercedes of the late 90's before everything was put onto a computer interface, every function had its own button.

First Look: 2009 Nissan GT-R

The 2009 Nissan GT-R isn't just entering the performance car market; it's detonating it.

Bulging with 473 horsepower from a twin-turbocharged V6, supported by an advanced rear-mounted transaxle, fortified by all-wheel drive and crafted around a high-tech chassis, the GT-R is built to shatter expectations, set new standards and, generally speaking, kick ass.

Due for its much-anticipated unveiling at the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show, the 2009 Nissan GT-R will finally arrive in the U.S. next spring. Nothing will ever be the same again.

Supercar Quickness?
Nissan tells us the GT-R will run from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.5 seconds, slam through the quarter-mile in 11.7 seconds and top out at 193 mph. These are numbers spectacular enough to shake the reputations of supercars like the Ferrari F430, Lamborghini Gallardo and Porsche 911 Turbo. And it's the sort of performance that should easily transcend that of every previous Nissan GT-R dating all the way back to the original 1969 Skyline GT-R PGC10.

If Nissan even slightly over-delivers on its promise of performance, the GT-R could conceivably be quicker than Porsche's 911 Turbo. This car has been used by Nissan as the benchmark for the GT-R's development, and it runs to 60 mph in a scorching 3.4 seconds and rockets through the quarter-mile in 11.6 seconds at 118.5 mph.

Yet unlike previous generations of the GT-R, this new edition isn't based on a mass-produced automobile. This GT-R is its own thing; it's related to other Nissans in about the same way that the Porsche 911 is related to the Volkswagen Beetle. The new GT-R isn't just a Skyline hot rod.

Beyond all this, Nissan promises the GT-R's price will come in at just under $80,000 when it goes on sale early next year. This isn't cheap, but it lets this technological showpiece challenge the Corvette Z06 as the universe's greatest performance bargain.

Familiar Looks, Unfamiliar Engineering
How this car looks shouldn't be a surprise, since Nissan has been hinting at its general shape for almost seven years. Way back in 2001, the company's GT-R Concept previewed this car's aggressive dark grille, stiletto-sharp headlights, general roof shape and muscular fenders. A second GT-R Concept, shown during the 2006 auto show season, only differs from the production car in such details as bumper covers and a few tweaks of fender shape.

Familiar in appearance as it is, the substance of the new GT-R is astounding in its engineering audacity.

The basic unibody monocoque structure — including the roof — is built from steel, but carbon fiber makes up a portion of the front structure, including the radiator support. Forward of this, the bumper and grille are made of lightweight polypropylene plastic. The all-aluminum double-wishbone front suspension mounts to a die-cast aluminum subframe, while both doors are also built around die-cast aluminum frames. Aluminum skins are used for the hood, front fenders, doors and trunk lid. Finally carbon fiber appears again at the car's tail, where it's used for the underbody air diffuser.

The payoff, claims Nissan, is that while the GT-R's body has 10 percent more surface area than that of the Nissan 350Z, the new car's body-in-white is actually 10 percent lighter overall. And the GT-R has an almost ludicrously slippery 0.27 coefficient of drag (Cd).

At 183.1 inches overall, the GT-R is exactly as long as a new Infiniti G37 coupe. But while they're both 2+2 passenger packages, the resemblance is almost a coincidence. The GT-R's 109.4-inch wheelbase is 2.8 inches shorter than that of the G37, and its 74.6-inch width is 2.8 inches wider than the G37. In addition, the GT-R's overall height of 54.0 inches is almost an inch shorter than the Infiniti coupe. There is simply no way the GT-R will be confused with a G37.

Uncompromised Engine
Expectations have been that the GT-R would use a twin-turbocharged version of Nissan's justly acclaimed (and nearly ubiquitous) VQ-Series V6. In fact the new VR38 engine in the GT-R is related to the VQ in much the same way that Homo sapiens have evolved from Australopithecus — they might be related, but one is a more evolved species.

Each intercooled, twin-turbo VR38 V6 will be hand-assembled by one of 12 technicians for installation in the GT-R. As the name implies, the VR38 displaces 3.8 liters. It's built around an aluminum block, and the cylinder bores have been sprayed with a coating of plasma some 0.15mm thick to provide the sealing surface for the piston rings. This is in contrast to the normal practice of inserting 2.6mm iron cylinder liners for the same purpose. Nissan claims this process saves about 6.6 pounds in the weight of the engine.

The cylinder heads appear to be a conventional DOHC design. But each cylinder bank has its own separate intake plenum and throttle body. Yet the crowning glories of the VR38 are its twin IHI turbochargers. These lightweight units spool up so quickly that Nissan says a full 434 pound-feet of peak torque is available from 3,200-5,200 rpm, while peak power is 473 hp at 6,400 rpm.

Not only does the VR38 promise to deliver epic performance, but it also happens to be gorgeous. So gorgeous, in fact, that Nissan hasn't hidden it under plastic covers, and instead detailed it for display under the GT-R's hood.

The Nissan GT-R is a car that gets more charismatic as its body panels are stripped off.

Uncompromised Drivetrain
To put all the VR38's power to work, Nissan has conjured up a unique drivetrain. The rear-mounted transaxle incorporates the function of a conventional center differential for the all-wheel-drive system.

A carbon-fiber driveshaft extends from the back of the VR38 V6 to the transaxle, spinning at engine speed. The transaxle features a dual-clutch six-speed gearbox similar in configuration to Audi's DSG design. A computer analyzes various performance parameters — available traction, steering angle, vehicle speed and others — and then adjusts the front-to-rear torque split accordingly. The power for the front wheels then travels forward on a smaller carbon-fiber driveshaft set above and to the right of the primary driveshaft.

The torque split is reassessed and adjusted by the onboard computers every 0.2 second and varies between 50 percent front/50 percent rear to 100 percent rear-wheel drive.

The transmission can operate in fully automatic mode, but it's best enjoyed using the shift paddles mounted on the steering wheel. Nissan promises "F1 gearshift speeds," with downshifts assisted by synchronized, rev-controlled throttle blips to match engine and transmission speeds to further increase shift speed.

Suspended and Bound
Of course the GT-R uses a racecar-style suspension with cast-aluminum double wishbones at each corner. And the suspension operates in three damping modes: "R" for "Race," "S" for "Sports" (the default setting) and "C" for "Comfort." The Bilstein DampTronic shock absorbers have been developed especially for the GT-R.

Nissan says that the GT-R has the best braking performance ever measured during Japan's compulsory model approval tests. With massive 15.0-inch cross-drilled rotors at each corner clamped by six-piston Brembo calipers in the front and four-piston versions in the rear, the braking promises to defy the laws of physics — slam the brake pedal and the car ought to stop behind where it was.

Bridgestone and Dunlop will both supply run-flat performance tires for the GT-R, fitting 255/40ZR20s up front and 285/35ZR20s out back. Unlike current run-flats, Nissan avows that these tires have softer, more compliant sidewalls. And they're so very special that they're filled at the factory with nitrogen rather than that crummy air we all breathe, which ensures inflation pressure will be unaffected by humidity. (It's a racing thing.)

Go-Go Gadget
The GT-R's rear seats aren't meant to be occupied by actual human beings, but should be useful for transporting kids and parcels. On the other hand, the driver and front passenger are well cared for. Each gets an ergonomically aggressive throne in which to sit, plus elegant controls and switches to operate.

The centerpiece of the interior is a multifunction display in the dash that Nissan tells us was developed in conjunction with Polyphony Digital, the same company that developed the Gran Turismo video games for the Sony PlayStation.

The multifunction display can be used to monitor engine coolant temperature, oil temperature, oil pressure, transmission oil pressure, turbocharger boost pressure, torque split, throttle position, steering angle and longitudinal and lateral G-force. The display is also a data logger that can be used to improve driving technique and can display an optimal gearshift map for drivers obsessed with fuel economy. And, really, who would buy this car if they weren't determined to eke out the most mileage from every drop of gasoline?

Of course there's a satellite-based navigation system, while the onboard entertainment system can play every sort of media except maybe Beta video and eight-track audio tapes.

Iconic and Built To Stay That Way
From the four round lights and large spoiler on the deck lid to the tough muscularity of the front grille, every square inch of the 2009 Nissan GT-R reflects the carmaker's commitment to performance and the heritage established by the GT-Rs of the past.

And, best of all, the legend is on its way to America at last

A Day in Germany With the GT-R Engineers

Cinching down the chin strap of his helmet, Toshio Suezaki's appearance transforms just before his thumb deploys the tidy flush-mounted door catch of the 2009 Nissan GT-R. The factory test driver is innocuous and soft-spoken, but in this moment his eyes harden. It is behind the wheel of this car, still camouflaged to frustrate spy shooters, that Suezaki-san will wield violence incongruous with his bookish manner just minutes later.

One of the primary performance objectives set forth by the Nissan GT-R's development team is to lap the Nürburgring's Nordschleife faster than a 997-based Porsche 911 Turbo. The 2009 Nissan GT-R had circled the famed circuit in 7 minutes and 55 seconds during endurance testing earlier in the year, trailing the 911 Turbo by 15 seconds.

We're here at the Nürburgring with Nissan on an exclusive invitation. Today it'll attempt to beat the 911 Turbo's lap time. It's morning in late September, and patches of roiling gray clouds that ebb and flow threaten to undermine the company's highly coordinated assault on the Green Hell.

A Legacy To Live Up to
More than a performance car, the 2009 Nissan GT-R is an icon, and a Nissan wearing this badge must build upon decades of heritage. This is the first GT-R to be sold in markets outside Japan, a car that has been tasked by CEO Carlos Ghosn to elevate the brand, inspire engineers, yet still be profitable. "The GT-R is forbidden to lose money," Ghosn states emphatically during our dinner in Cologne, Germany.

Racing dawn the following morning, we blast our Nissan Patrol up the autobahn to Nürburg. We step into Nissan's sparkling garage situated just outside the circuit and clap eyes on the GT-R, one of the most anticipated cars in years. A half-dozen technicians mill busily about three prototypes, all of which are silver and still wear black vinyl diapers over the nose and tail.

The car has a brutal, chunky presence that does not come through in photographs. It is certainly not a beautiful car, yet its surface development is complex enough to grab your gaze like a grappling hook. Nissan wouldn't have it any other way. "We didn't want a nice elegant shape. We wanted an original shape," says GT-R Design Director Shiro Nakamura.

Earlier GT-Rs, sold in Japan from 1969 to 2002, were hotted-up versions of workaday Skyline sedans or coupes and were called Skyline GT-R, but the 2008 GT-R represents the first to be built entirely on its own platform. Called Premium Midship in Nissan's vernacular, the GT-R's bare body-in-white is said to weigh less than the 350Z's.

At 183.1 inches in length, the GT-R is a large car. It stretches 7.5 inches longer than a 911, Corvette Z06 or Dodge Viper and its 109.4-inch wheelbase similarly eclipses the others. This large shadow helps to package rear seats that are more sizable than a 911's — but still not really intended for adults to inhabit during long trips — and an 8.3-cubic-foot trunk that can swallow two golf bags.

Anywhere, Anytime, by Anyone
The stated goal is to create a practical performance car whose capabilities can be exploited "anywhere, anytime, by anyone." To this end, the GT-R's greenhouse is as upright as a Marine. And its front seats are said to have more adjustment range than those in any other supercar in an unconfirmed attempt to attract the professional athlete and other full-size customers. Dampers, stability control and gearchange speed all have multiple settings to adjust their level of aggression.

Performance promises to be scintillating. Nissan's internal testing pegs the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint at 3.5 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 11.7 seconds despite the Japanese-specification model's 3,836-pound curb weight.

Top speed is 310 km/h (193 mph), an accomplishment to which Chief Engineer Kazutoshi Mizuno adds, "Building a 310 km/h car is not a particularly difficult challenge. The challenge is to build a car that is stable and quiet at that speed; a car that is comfortable and easy to drive at that speed."

This overarching do-all philosophy dictated the GT-R's all-wheel-drive system and run-flat tires mounted on 20-inch wheels. Customers will have a choice between Bridgestone Potenza RE070R summer tires and Dunlop all-season rubber.

More Than a Lap Time
Exploring the garage, it's obvious from the numerous spares on hand that setting a fast lap isn't Nissan's only priority among its Nürburgring activities. There are rows of six-piston calipers and 15-inch steel brake rotors lining the workbenches. Tires stacked to the ceiling bear numerous cryptic markings.

This is the development team's seventh visit to the circuit over the GT-R's development cycle, the first three of which were with early prototypes wearing G35 coupe bodies.

"It was pretty damn quick right out of the box," recalls Senior Project Engineer Bruce Robinson. "We would improve by a few seconds on each visit, but [each trip's purpose] was mostly refinement. Quite a bit of the tuning was to nail down the feel of the steering, the feel of the car."

Many testing sessions were spent with an engineer from Bilstein, who accompanied Nissan on trips to Laguna Seca and Infineon Raceway in Northern California, the streets of Los Angeles and Japan's Sendai Highlands Raceway. "It's gotta perform at the 'Ring," Robinson continues, alluding to the headline-grabbing nature of 'Ring lap times, "but it doesn't mean you forget about everything else."

And everywhere Nissan brought the GT-R, the 911 Turbo went, too.

Building the Most Expensive Nissan
As the company's flagship, Nissan is intent on ensuring that the GT-R makes a strong impression on its buyers. A portion of Nissan's Yokohama assembly plant was set aside as an engine assembly "clean room," where 12 assemblers are dedicated to building each GT-R's twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6. This clean room follows the practices of race engine shops, where a single technician is responsible for an entire engine's assembly. Both the engine and six-speed sequential manual gearbox are hand-built.

Deviating from the inline-6 layout of previous GT-Rs, the all-aluminum DOHC V6 is known as VR38 and shares its 60-degree vee angle and bore spacing with Nissan's acclaimed VQ-Series, which is used in everything from the 350Z to several Infiniti SUVs. Few parts are shared between the two engine series.

Each body shell is placed on a vibration rig to verify that its natural frequency, a direct indicator of stiffness, is within specified bounds. Once fully assembled, all GT-Rs are exercised by a factory driver on Nissan's 18-mile Tochigi test track prior to delivery.

A three-year service program is included with the purchase of each GT-R. This program consists of wheel alignments and engine and transmission checkups every year. Only those dealerships willing to invest in this equipment and training required by the factory have a shot at having GT-Rs grace their showrooms. In Japan, 10 percent of Nissan's sales outlets will offer GT-Rs and we expect a similar ratio Stateside.

Running the 'Ring
It turns out our seat time with Suezaki-san piloting the GT-R is scheduled right after lunch. As in minutes after lunch ends. The idea of the GT-R's 473 horsepower and 434 lb-ft of torque tag-teaming the 12.9-mile Nordschleife is enough to turn many would-be passengers green with nausea. I'm regretting my lunch choice of seafood pasta.

As casually as possible, I attempt to communicate this potentially messy situation while twisting the GT-R's ingenious all-in-one seat adjustment knob. In his best English comes Suezaki-san's reply, "Medium-fast, or fast-fast?"

How do you say, "Let's start out fast-fast and if my gastrointestinal tract doesn't cooperate, you'll have to dial it back right quick" across a language barrier?

Suezaki-san tears onto the track and wastes no time bringing the GT-R right to the limit of the tires' adhesion. 'Ring veterans say that it takes 50 laps of the circuit just to memorize the sequence of all 73 turns. Suezaki-san has lapped the circuit several hundred times.

It's manufacturer pool day at the Nürburgring, meaning that the track is currently closed to the public. Traffic is light, but not light enough to make a completely clean lap, and the only other cars we encounter are bandaged-up development mules. I ponder the irony of two top-secret prototypes belonging to competing manufacturers colliding into one another.

We pass all of them, and Suezaki-san gives a friendly wave as he flashes by.

As we reach the end of the main straight leading from Döttinger Höhe, I glance down at the LCD readout temporarily mounted to the passenger side of the dashboard to gain some kind of perspective on the rate at which the scenery is smearing by: 269 km/h, or just over 167 mph. A brush of the brakes and we enter the fast Antoniusbuche left-hander at more than 150 mph as my driver's suit strains against the grippy Alcantara lining the seat surface.

It's over before I expect, and in the end we clocked in at 8 minutes, 13 seconds. Our lap was not intended to be a record attempt, yet nonetheless represents an enviable pace.

The Fastest Lap
The record lap would be set by Nissan's top shoe, Suzuki-san, who ultimately turned in a lap in 7 minutes, 38 seconds on a partially wet circuit. Those ominous clouds looming in the sky earlier in the day left their mark on two areas of the track, Kesselchen and Wehrsiefen, and required Suzuki-san to rein his speed in a bit.

Beating a 911 Turbo around the Nordschleife is an accomplishment at any price, but pipping it by 2 seconds, on a partly damp circuit, at an estimated price point of $80,000 is something else entirely.

Sunset Over Nürburg
The Nissan GT-R will be unveiled on October 25 at the Tokyo auto show, but is already creating waves among the sports car establishment.

Just hours after the record run, one of Nissan's engineers receives a phone call while we pack up our gear. He then clicks his cell phone closed and laughs. The guy on the other end of the line works closely with another manufacturer. He wanted to confirm a rumor he'd just heard: Did it really run a 7:38?

Gran Turismo creators tapped to design Nissan GT-R display

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/18/gran-turismo-creators-tapped-to-design-nissan-gt-r-display/

We just got done reading Inside Line's take on the new Nissan GT-R, its painstaking development at the Nurburgring and how Nissan engineers sought to make it the definitive everyday supercar, a title that its Porsche rival has assumed for the past several years. A number of eye-opening facts were revealed, including that only about ten-percent of dealers will be able to service the GT-R (those being the only ones able to sell it), that the seats were designed to be almost infinitely adjustable and that according to the GT-R's design director, Shiro Nakamura, "We didn't want a nice elegant shape. We wanted an original shape." Check that.

The other interesting tidbit was that Polyphony Digital, the company behind the Gran Tursimo franchise, was contracted to develop the multifunction LCD – a staple of the last generation GT-R. The new display, much like the old, will log dozens of different pieces of information – from engine temps to Gs – and if it's anywhere near as cool looking as the teaser image above, we're sure it will provide endless hours of amusement for lucky owners and their motion-sick passengers.

Car and Driver GT-R Preview

here is the link 4 anyone who like to read it all
http://www.caranddriver.com/previews/14221/first-look-2009-nissan-gt-r-finally-available-in-the-us-page2.html

and here it is what I think it's new or imp.

- we’ve already driven a preproduction car, on condition of silence until next month regarding our driving impressions. But the vow of silence regarding mechanical particulars expires now :mumble: :mumble: :mumble:

- The foundation for the new GT-R will be a chassis dedicated to this application—no commonality, according to Nissan, with the corporate FM architecture, the structure that made a grand entrance on the revived Z car in 2002.

- the GT-R’s performance capabilities will go well beyond those of any production 350Z, and also because the structure will be handling thrust from all four corners via Nissan’s ATTESA E-TS all-wheel-drive system. Unlike versions of this system in other Nissan vehicles—the Infiniti G35x, for example—the GT-R setup employs a yaw sensor and is capable of instantly transferring torque from side to side, as well as fore-and-aft, as conditions dictate. :jerkoff: :jerkoff: :jerkoff:

- twin-turbo 3.8-liter DOHC 24-valve 60-degree oversquare aluminum V-6 (VR38) with variable valve timing on both cams and plasma-applied coating on the cylinder walls rather than steel liners. Nissan insists this engine is all-new and unrelated to the VQ sixes that propel the Z car, Infiniti Gs, and others, which is interesting since the bore (95.5 millimeters) is exactly the same. The new six is force-fed by a pair of IHI turbos via an air-to-air intercooler. Max boost is 10.2 psi

- it won’t disappoint anyone except maybe tuners. We say that because the Nissan development team proudly claims it has made the car’s ECU tamper-proof. The objective seems to be to portray the engine as environmentally friendly. Yeah, right. And with a little training, tigers make terrific house pets. But tuners always manage to crack the codes, so for those GT-R owners who will inevitably want more, hang in there.

- hoping to sell a thousand a month

- PROJECTED FUEL ECONOMY (C/D EST):
EPA city driving: 15 mpg
EPA highway driving: 22 mpg

Nissan to raise sales with technical support Specialized for GT-R Dealers

TOKYO (MarketWatch) — Nissan Motor Co. (7203.TO) said Wednesday that it will provide staff in Japan with special training to improve their automobile maintenance skills in order to deal with more advanced devices used in cars.

In a bid to enhance its sales operations, the Tokyo-based auto maker will launch “Nissan High Performance Center,” a new sales and technical service center, when it introduces its flagship Nissan GT-R in December in the domestic market.

Takao Katagiri, a Nissan corporate vice president said at a press conference for the service that inspections and maintenance work for the advanced sports car require special skills and knowledge because of its new technology.

“The accuracy required (for technical support for the GT-R) is high. We need technical staff who can do that,” Katagiri said.

Yoshimitsu Kaji, a Nissan marketing director, said sales staff will also need to be trained to better accommodate customers for the sports car that sells for prices starting from around Y7.8 million.

Customers interested in expensive sports cars tend to be more demanding and they will form a new customer base for the company, he said.

The company will set up high performance centers at 160 Nissan dealerships to provide skilled sales and technical staff.

As part of the move, the car company will offer three-week special training programs for such special mechanics, longer than the two-day training Nissan usually provides when it rolls out a new model, Kaji said.

By having skilled personnel, Nissan aims to improve its overall sales and technical services, Kaji said.

The new service is Nissan’s latest effort to shore up its flagging domestic sales.

Earlier this year, Japanese third biggest car maker by sales reorganized its domestic sales operations by setting up regional sales groups after posting its first annual profit drop in seven years in the fiscal year ended March.

Most of the specifics of the new sports car, such as what electronic systems and technologies are installed will be kept under wraps until next Wednesday when the car is unveiled at the Tokyo auto show.

The GT-R will be rolled out overseas following its launch in Japan. But sales operations outside Japan may take a different strategy, he adde

Press Release

Nissan promises special care for GT-R sports car
TOKYO (AP) - Nissan’s new super-sports car, the GT-R, is a rare challenge to European and American automakers by a Japanese company more used to family friendly offerings like the Altima sedan.
Nissan claims the muscle car, to be introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show opening next week, is so sophisticated it is training scores of maintenance workers at dealers in Japan to service the vehicle.
«The GT-R requires special attention because its technology is so advanced,» Corporate Vice President Takao Katagiri said Wednesday. «It also calls for finesse in salesmanship because the sales representative must deal with customers who are going to be very demanding.
Nissan is setting up 160 showrooms called «high-performance centers» around the country for maintenance work on the GT-R.
Similar back-up support for the GT-R is being considered for the U.S., where the sale will follow the Japan debut, but details aren’t decided. The service will be offered at American Nissan, not Infiniti luxury, showrooms.
BMW and Porsche sports cars need special care for their revved up, delicate engines, but such dealers are prepared for high-quality maintenance.
Anticipation is high among car fans for the 7.8 million yen (US$67,000; ¤47,000) Nissan GT-R, although Nissan has given scant specifics. The company has not given a U.S. price yet, but the vehicle is being promised to come under US$80,000.
Nissan already sells other sporty models, including the Z sports car, but it costs a third of the GT-R, which is billed as more powerful.
Nissan has set up a Web page with a countdown clock until the launch to hype the car. GT-R won’t be promoted in Japan with any TV ads, which Nissan says are only effective for mass market models.
The model will be on show at the Tokyo auto show, which opens to the public Oct. 27. The event also displays many futuristic «concept» models that aren’t for sale.
Analysts say that high-end sports cars aren’t expected to sell in numbers, especially after the hype wears off, but they are critical for a manufacturer’s image, not a practical moneymaking endeavor.
«Obviously, the size of the market is very, very small,» said Credit Suisse Japan auto analyst Koji Endo. «It’s really an image issue.
Japanese rival Toyota Motor Corp. is also strengthening its sports car lineup, and recently showed the Lexus IS F, which goes on sale in Japan in December, and early next year elsewhere.

Sports cars come with some risks.
Nissan officials said they were worried about possible social ills _ citing safety and noise concerns _ from how people might use or modify such a powerful car.

- As heroic as the engine is, the six-speed dual-clutch automated manual gearbox is a key contributor to the GT-R's personality. The paddle-shifted gearbox, mounted between the rear wheels, changes gears seamlessly with astonishing speed. Shifts are claimed to take just 0.2 second from the time the lever is pulled until the clutch is fully engaged.

In full automatic mode, the transmission calls up 6th gear even at low speeds in order to maximize fuel economy, but will downshift without delay when the throttle's dipped

- Exiting an uphill right-hander in 3rd gear, the 1.5-way limited-slip differential (which locks aggressively on acceleration but less so on lift-throttle) is briefly overwhelmed by my heavy right foot. The momentary wheelspin can be felt in the steering wheel, yet the traction available in the all-wheel-drive GT-R is prodigious. It's easy to drive the GT-R fast. Dangerously easy, if you value maintaining a valid driver license.

- The twin-turbo VR38 engine runs 10.1-11.6 psi boost and employs a 9.0:1 compression ratio. Tuners will be frustrated by the fact that the turbos are integrated into the exhaust manifolds.

a like the end

" Bright Future
Even in this preproduction state and among the nonstop hype, it's hard not to be impressed by the Nissan GT-R. The car's performance envelope is as broad as Texas, and it is as perfectly content creeping along in rain-drizzled traffic as it is smashing the Nürburgring lap times of some of the world's fastest sports cars. It demands little sacrifice from its owner, offering all-weather capability in a truly practical package.

And it's devastatingly fast."

believe it or not, but I'm thankful the Japs get it before us. They get to be because we will have from this December until next September for them to discover and weed out any bugs that didn't get phased out during development. hopefully there aren't too many issues in this car, i mean its been under development for the past 6 years. But still it would be ignorant to say that this car wont have any problems when it comes out.

I cant wait to see this car black on black!

Inshalla they don't neglect us with this car and give us 100% of the options available from the start.

Also i really hope the dealer here takes this car seriously.

Imagine the sound this monster is gonna be making when you put on a decent cat back exhaust. All due respect to the corvette but ive been driving car with a 6 liter push rod V8 for over 3 years now,and with all the camaros around Bahrain constantly reving. im not wowed by the sound anymore hehe :P. I wanna hear these twin turbos spooling up and giving a deep juicy exhaust note.

The kind or baritone exhaust note that you can feel in more your chest than ringing in you head.

You know, the more i look at that front, the more i think Nissan intentionally got rid of those side vents to give the body kit market a big boost. People are gonna be putting lip spoilers and side splitters and canards on this thing like crazy.

At least we have a while from when its realized i japan until we get it here
for the japs to develop some body accessories and other goodies!

like some have said. I don't think we will be getting this car in the dealers in Bahrain. Maybe in 1 or 2 dealers in UAE but thats it. Some might import it to Bahrain but I don't see how you can service a new car like this without all the correct equipment and technical expertise

Ive said this before and ill say it again, just wait a few more hours and see the actual car and all the REAL specs, I,m sure its a heavy car but the reasons for its heavy weight are still unclear, maybe the tech that is weighing it down makes it better... maybe not. But i don't like rumors, this car has been under development for 6 years and its the flagship of a brand that i'snt known for messing up their sports cars.

As for the GTR not coming to Bahrain, it will there are 16 global variants, the question is, is the dealer in Bahrain good enough to maintain such a high spec car? Because Mitsubishi have been selling Evos for years, but they are crap at maintaining them and don't stock enough parts.

2010 Nissan GT-R Spec V

It's official, there will be a 2010 Nissan GT-R Spec V and it will be sold in America. A Nissan source has confirmed that a lightweight, more powerful version of the new supercar is nearly complete and will arrive in America about a year after the GT-R hits U.S. dealers early next summer. -- Scott Oldham, Inside Line Editor in Chief

Nissan to debut GT-R in Japan's Super GT series

During the live unveiling of the Nissan GT-R, CEO Carlos Goshen made hints at Nissan running the GT-R in Japan's Super GT series. While it was pretty inevitable the GT-R would eventually be unleashed on the racetrack, it was unknown how long it would take before cars were constructed and tested. Today Nissan announced the NISMO entry of a GT-R in the GT500 class for the upcoming 2008 season. It has been four years since Nissan last ran a GT-R in this series. They have since been running V8 powered 350Zs. The Super GT GT-R's technical details will be released during a NISMO press conference in February. Since the 350Z underwent an incredible transformation when built for Super G it will be very interesting to see how the new GT-R will appear with some added diffusers and canards.

I wonder how tuners and shops would overcome the Ghay automatic tranny problem and replace with a real manual/seq tranny

Especially that it's a tranaxle this time ..

and btw.. The VR engine is sealed from nissan this time, so that If the average tuner tries to modify it or add aftermarket parts, nissan would know and it would void the warranty

They can do it easily. Make a bell housing, and build a gearbox just like they did for every other car. Choose the correct gear ratios, matched with RPM and power bands, and it will be done.

Nothing is impossible if you have the facilities to build it and the brains to make it work.

It's tranaxle not like any other car nissan made !

Tranaxle my friend means the transmission is in the rear of the car attached to the diff not to the engine like it used to :)

Sorry, I didn't read that it was a transaxle. And don't worry, I know what it is :)

But, it still shouldn't stop them from building one. Just give them time, they will design a manual gearbox for it and it will sell like hot cakes.

Dude, The new GR6 tranny is an automatic one with paddle shift, ain't sequential :duh:

I know man... that what even makes it better.... better launch and rev-matching when down-shifting

it's not ur everyday auto, somthing more compared to the F1 tranny by Ferrari and the new age SMG by BMW.

And it also designed to eliminate excuses like "miss-shifts" from the dictionary of the GTR :D

I feel like we not going to see alot of mods in the next year or so.... and maybe the big tuners will have thier own branded cars like HKS GT-R or ENDLESS GT-R with thier own full packeges and they will offer a manual and then everything will start ... becouse the manual transaxle will change the weight distribution ... so it's alot of work to do in !!! or just wait for the nismo edition and pray for a manual !!!

Z06 is a manual transaxle right ?

Power is not the only reason this car performs the way it is. Its also the way it has been set up for the track. The set up for the Suzuka track is far different from the set up for the BIC.

And then of course, there is the issue of having a good driver.

here r sum pics i took from the show... the car looks gr8 from every angle even the so called ugly front it has looks really aggressive in real life, its not ugly at all and desnt need touches here n there, its PERFECT!!!...

i couldnt take pics of the interior cuz it was locked but i had a peak inside and it looked super. props to Nissan for building this amazing car!

and btw guys i got sum secret info about it from a close friend whos one of the Admins of GTROC that also works for Nissan and is one of the guys who drove the GTR for 3 days in Japan ( street and on track ) after Tokyo Motorshow. He says that the car is unbelievably fast, comfortable on normal settings, feels like a german car, doesnt feel heavy...i asked him what about the seats?low, high? he said its just in between, the only thing that he dislikes is that the seat dont hold u that tight when cornering.

now for the secret info, The car has faster acceleration than what it says on paper and internet, 0-100 is in 3.1sec not 3.5sec, the Alacantra roofline is not 100% alacantra. he also said that they tested one with 30kg's less by removing the AC, Bose system, and some other tiny bits from the interior...so i asked him how did it perform???? he said: it felt like i raised the boost from 1 bar to 1.5 in my GTR34!!

thats what i can say, there is much more to say about this car but i cant say it here cuz i promised him not to tell anyone about this specific thing.. plus he's a GGT guest and knows my username....the only thing i can tell u that its something to do with the gearbox :nofear:

enjoy the pics

To you maybe, but to me, a white R34 or bayside blue R34 is stunning. And in front of my eyes, even more beautiful.

This one is not wild enough, and is not distinctive, as many cars look like it. The front end is very much like the 350Z, the rear is round lights like every GT-R has been. But the body lines are similar, and the wing looks ricey.
