Exotic versus Super Car?
What constitutes a car as an exotic versus a super car? Is it top speed? Cost? Exclusivity?
I saw in EVO that the Z06 was in the category of super cars, yet I would have expected it to be in with the sports cars like the 911.
I know this is basically a useless post but I'm curious as to your thoughts.
And how about an NSX and GT3, what cateogry would these fall under?
Thanks

Yes, this is a useless post - so here is a useless opinion.....The Z06 is a super car. It is not an exotic. Which 911 - some are super cars - some are pretty exotic. These guys with Z06's and superchargers under the hood - they are borderline exotics. The NSX (IMHO) is a sports car. It is not a super car or an exotic. I hope this helps confuse you as much as it did me to think about it.:laughing2

How about this take -
Exotic is like a Ferrari Enzo, F50, F40 or 288GTO, the original Testarossa and the 512BB... or a Pagani Zonda or a Lamborghini Diablo or Countach... or a Porsche 959... or the McLaren F1...
A supercar would be like the ZR1, Z06, Porsche 911 TT, GT2 or GT3 Porsches, Lotus Esprit V8, Lambo Jalpa, Ferrari 348/355/360 series...
A sports/sporty car would be the NSX, Skyline GTR, C5, GrandSport C4, Ferrari 308/328, and the Dino series, non-turbo Porsche 911 & 928GTS, Supra, Lotus Esprit Turbo, the BMW M3, M5 and old M6...

I get it, so an exotic can be a supercar but a supercar is not an exotic, right?

I totally agree with Super Black. Very rare and expensive cars I call exotic. Supercar is based on power. So yes, an exotic can be a supercar, and often is. But the question of performance based on the era of the car also becomes an issue. Take the original testerossa for example. If you compare the performance to today's sports cars it definitely won't trample a z06 for example, but if you compare it against the same cars of it's time, it will trample those. So in deciding whether a car is a supercar, I think you have to compare it to the cars of it's own time. For this reason, I think that cars like the teserossa and countach are supercars, even though their performance doesn't stand up to as many sports cars today.
I don't think this was really a useless post, because I think people should consider the categorys when they compare cars. I've heard people in several sites say that the m3 can't even stand up against the z06, and sometimes downtalk it for that reason. I love m3, but I know it doesn't approach the z06 performance, which is in a different category, supercar vs. sportscar, as Super Black said. I think both are fine cars though, albiet in different categories.
