DaimlerChrysler is preparing for the autumn 2004 launch of the replacement of the current A-Class, which has been on the market since 1998.
While the A-Class was until now only available in two versions, a standard five-door, and a long version five-door, the future will hold more variants of this model. Right from the start of the next generation A-Class, Mercedes will release simultaneously the new five-door and a coupe-like three-door. Both cars will have a longer wheelbase that matches that of the current long-wheelbase A-Class.
Some time later, Mercedes will add another model and create a new B-Class, which is based on the A-Class architecture. It is a so-called Compact Sports Tourer (CST) with an even longer wheelbase, set to fill a gap in the company's model range between A- and C-Class on the premium leisure compact market. The CST will be offered for sale in the U.S. as an entry-level sport wagon.
The new A- and B-Class models will be offered with a choice of gas engines from 1.5 liters to 2.0 liters. Three diesels will range from 1.6 liters to 2.0 liters.
