How is an supercharger different from a turbocharger?
A supercharger is connected directly to the crankshaft by a belt unlike a turbocharger which is driven by exhaust gases. An Eaton supercharger provides improved horsepower and torque, at lower engine rpm's, by pumping extra air into the engine in direct relationship to crankshaft speed. The positive connection yields instant response, in contrast to turbochargers, which must overcome inertia and spin up to speed as the flow of exhaust gas increases. The supercharger is a way to get around "turbo lag". The lubrication system also differs, in that, the supercharger is self-contained whereas the turbocharger requires engine oil.

u forgot to mention that turbo's Can be run in Twin or Signle application
and your average supercharger runs 7-8 psi
where turbo's go 15-20-25 psi
and i've heard that turbo car is easier to drive then a Supercharged car... less traction problems and such
most superchargers can't be intercooled either cuz they bold right onto the head
to change the power on a supercharger u have to change the pully
in a turbo all u need is a Boost controller, or even adjust it from the waste gate
if u're lookin for something easy to install and maintain but have medium perfomance
go supercharger
if u're lookin for lotsa power, with more customizability and "high boost" and "low boost" capabilities... Turbo is the way to go...
just cutting and pasting a paragraph from a website doesn't tell ppl very much of the story

My supercharger has an Intercooler and i can run it up to 11.5 PSI
The new gen of chargers are a lot better now....

i am not a genius at these things :puter:
but i heard that superchargers only work from start however turbo's work at middle rpm as in 3000 or 4000 ?
if im wrong please correct me :fro:

ur correct, superchargers get their spin from the crank, turbos use exhaust flow from the engine to spin the turbine..at low rpms the pressure from the exhaust is less..this is a very simple explanation..;)

May 10th, 2004, 07:41 PM
yeah thats correct, because the exhaust gases move the turbo, and for that it usually needs to be at a higher RPM than idle. Superchgs can be switched on from idle cuz of the direct connection to the crank
problem with turbos and supers in our weather is that it gets too hot here, and you get the most performance out of them when its cold... if u install one you will notice quite a difference in the winter and summer time

Turbo For Ever
in 4 cylender applications the turbo always had the best HP and Q/miles
V8's NO experiance :p

Roots style are the ones you refer to, and some are intercoole-eg 03 Cobra, Lightning, etc.
Centrifigal superchargers(ATI, Vortech) are almost exactly the same as a turbo, bit they are belt driven.
Mine even looks like a turbo, and is air to air intercooled.
It sounds like a turbo, too, when it starts to build boost, and "whistles"
Just thought I would throw in some correct statements here :D

is it true that all M-powers have superchargers? like little baby ones? cuz my friend kept sayin that they did, but i would agree with him the M3 might have a small one, but the M5 no way! its pure N/A power!! ain't that a fact?

All M's are N/A.... :up2: no superchargers... only the new AMG's are
