I feel bad for my car.....
I have this annoying noise coming from (I think) the gearbox. no noise at 1st and 2nd gear (see the video) and also in 3rd. it only starts from 4th gear up to 6th gear and it gets very loud on very light throttle specially on 6th gear!!
any inputs? check both oil level and both were fine (gearbox and diff) would changing the oil help?
see vid

I really hope that it comes from the rear diff, cuz it would be waaay easier to fix...... just replaceing the rear end (I will upgrade if it's bad rear end) but the noise I hear is coming from the gearbox :( how it could be damaged even if there is oil??

It's most probably from your diff, that's a very common problem on older cars like the ae86, especially when you put some power through them

Change your rear diff oil to 90 wt and check it out,if not, It's time to upgrade a KAAZ or cusco 2 way LSD ..

lift the car on 4 jacks and accelerate and let someone listen to where the sound is exactly coming from :)

goodluck

thanks guys, I really hope that it's coming from the rear diff..... I'll take it to my mechanic this weekend to check it

are u using the stock diff?

u can upgrade it to later Supra diff I believe MK3 or something like that..

it's almost a direct swap if I remember correctly

but the Supra diff is an axle-type diff, not sure if it's a direct fit.

A good simple solution is a Hilux diff, it is a 1410mm unit

I thought about the hilux diff, but it has 5 studs and no rear disc's + no after market LSDs :(

you mean MK2.... been looking for them but no luck, all I found was 2.0L ones which has the same diff as my 86 but with drum brakes?

I'm thinking of replacing the ring and pinion with new one and see how long it will hold (hopefully waaaay longer than my current 24yr old ring and pinion :rollaf: )

it will be better this summer inshallah :D I already have my TRD itbs, buddy club spec II exhaust, and my motec M4 and the 0.5mm head gasket are on the way...... one thing I need now is a week off to go to abudabi and get it tuned :afro:

will make ~260hp NA without touching the engine internals :D

last step will be refreshing the interior, then I'm 100% done :D

If the diff is making noise then it’s already worn out /damaged
Changing oil will not make a difference.
