Mercedes CLS 4-Door Coupe
ercedes' unusual new E-class-based four-door coupé - dubbed Jag-fighter - has broken cover.
We caught it testing in the US in advance of its unveiling as a concept at the Frankfurt Show in September, but it's unlikely to go on sale in Germany until late 2004. Prices will start at around 69,000 Euros. Even heavily disguised the sleek profile is clear, with its tapering glasshouse and plunging nose. False B-pillar covers hide a neat styling detail - flush-fitting glass that gives a pillarless look while keeping the structural strength of a pillar.
Although it is a full four-door, the coupé is distanced from the E-class saloon - which provides 85 per cent of its componentry - by a luxurious interior and sharper suspension with which it will tackle the new BMW 6-Series head-on.
The coupé signifies Mercedes' belief that buyers want more stylish and individual models, inspired by Brit rival Jaguar's current range. It is undecided on a name for the new car, which will slot in between the CLK and CL. Current favourite is CLS.
Engines will range from a 215-HP 3.2 V6 through 5.0 V8 to a 493-HP supercharged 5.4 V8. No diesel version has been confirmed, but both six-and eight-cylinder diesels will fit. Inside, the four individual seats are set low to ensure decent headroom in spite of the sweeping roofline. Each features electric adjustment climate control and a built-in massage function. @Automedia
