A four-door Porsche sedan is being planned by the German car manufacturer, with a launch date pencilled in for 2008 provided a development partner can be found, according to German automotive industry magazine Auto Motor und Sport.
The high-priced, high-performance model would be Porsche's fourth after its classic 911 sports car, its Boxster and its Cayenne SUV which was developed in a joint venture with Volkswagen. Porsche would produce 20,000 of the sedans a year at its plant in Leipzig.
Approached for comment on the report, a Porsche spokesman said it was speculation as no decision had been taken on a fourth model.
Auto Motor und Sport said Porsche's made-over 911 would reach German showrooms in September, while a remodelled Boxster would be unveiled at the Salon d'Automobile in Paris in September and be on sale by the end of the year.
Commenting on the report, automotive industry sources said the date for the 911 launch was set for early summer, but Porsche would say nothing about the fourth model range till the two sports car models had been introduced to the buying public.
Auto Motor und Sport predicted the sedan would retail at about $264,000 dollars.
The Stuttgart-based company expects to deliver 75,000 cars worldwide this year, with nearly half or 35,000 sold in North America. The Cayenne has beaten sales forecasts, but sales of the mid-engined Boxster, now in its eighth model year, have been lagging.
