Well, it's the first show of the 2004 season and I was lucky enough to attend the first Formlula Drift ever here at Road Atlanta. I've been reading "all" the tuner magazines recently so I could bone up on the Drift phenomenon; actually I've been a tuner fan for some time now. The truth be known the "misses" is always getting on to me about all the magazines I won't get rid of! "But honey this one has an awesome Skyline in it!" Anyway that's another topic altogether. I also have an extensive video collection of some drift competitions but nothing beats being there in person. I'm hooked! I was screaming and yelling and chanting, "one more time, one more time", on all the really competitive runs. Drifting is it for me, what a rush! I have to admit though I was really surprised at some of the match ups. One of the best was the Viper vs. the AE86. Now, I'm going to be honest, I thought the Viper would kick the 86's butt all over the track. Oh but contraire senior Eddie, the 86 proved to be a great competitor and I thoroughly enjoyed watching these two cars run at it. When the 86 caught the Viper in the horse shoe turn, while drifting the whole time, and passed on the inside to come out ahead the crowd went insane! The Viper was quick to regain its lead once in straight section of track but I have a greater respect for that 86 after seeing that display of driving excellence.
Drifting wasn't the only thing going down at R.A. the great folks at Mazda Extreme Street put on a great car show to boot and the cars were off the hook. Check out turbo charged racing Supra brought in by Pablo Rodriguez, Marketing Director for ImportAtlanta.com. The turbo was huge, so we put a cell phone next to it so you can be an idea of the scale of this thing. OMG! What else can I say! All the vendor where in full swing and the Mopar folks had a very sweet set up indeed and a 12 second SRT-4 supplied by Mike Hayes of Hayes Chrysler. I got to meet David Norton from Spec Performance Clutches while I was there. He was kind enough to bring me up to date on his latest product line. I also want to thank Fred Chang of Slip Stream Global Marketing for getting me in to the event and to Earl Fannin of Road Atlanta for the press passes. Special thanks go out to Jeremy Sharpe for all the help in getting my own car ready for the show this weekend and CJ Evers of Cryofuzion.com for putting up with all the madness and questions from me this week. Also thanks to Wicked Ways Custom Cycle Shop in Lawrenceville, GA for coming through on a short notice paint job. Well gang if this is a preview of things to come this season it going to be one of the best ever.
