Ban threatened over 'Arabian Gulf' tag

TEHRAN: Iran has threatened to ban airlines from using its airspace if they refer to the waterway between Iran and Arab states as the 'Arabian' instead of 'Persian' Gulf.

The unusual move reflects tension in the region over Iran's dispute with the US and its allies over its nuclear enrichment activities and the position of Arabian Peninsula states caught between ties to Washington and fear of Tehran.

Gulf Arab states share US anxiety that Iran seeks to develop a nuclear weapons capability.

"The airlines of the southern Gulf countries flying to Iran are warned to use the term Persian Gulf on their electronic display boards," Road and Transport Minister Hamid Behbahani said.

"Otherwise they will be banned from Iranian airspace for a month the first time and upon repetition their aircraft will be grounded in Iran and flight permits to Iran will be revoked," he added.

Iran said it is considering plans to build two new uranium enrichment plants concealed inside mountains to avert air strikes, drawing condemnation from the US.

The announcement from Iran's atomic chief Ali Akbar Salehi came soon after top US General David Petraeus warned that Washington would now pursue a "pressure track" against Iran to thwart its galloping nuclear programme.

Official Organizations such as Airlines and Government Agencies should always use the UN certified name of the Persian Gulf. Of course this is just semantics but Iran is treating this like a national threat, as usual this is just saber rattling from Iran; they honestly have bigger things to worry about than the name of a body of water.

I think a more appropriate name for the gulf would be il baloo3a, considering the amount of pollution in the water from all the petrochemicals, raw sewage and other goodies that are openly dumped in its waters.

I remember in Bahrain School, the name Persian Gulf on american books were smudged out and replaced with arabian gulf, which i thought was stupid. So i guess what goes around comes around.

you do realise that you're not making sense, do u?

if u wanna talk about ARABIA... there are countries that still use that form in their official name like Saudi ARABIA, United ARAB Emirates, Syrian ARAB Republic, Great Socialist People's Libyan ARAB Jamahiriya.. and so on. While Iran's official name is Islamic Republic of Iran. So naming Persia on the body of water after a country's former name doesn't make sense since it no longer exists. but the name Arabia still does as i have stated above :)
