View Full Version : Am i doing this right ?

the problem :
we have two dreambox's and one phone line for internet
DB1 is connected to a router on the second floor
DB2 is the one i need to connect with the same network , so that i use it fully
but i dont wanna run a wire between those two floors and all over the walls
the wifi signal reaches the middle of the two floors , so i have a solution already for this which is a wifi extender and it works great
now what i'm thinking of doing is ,,, i buy a router , put it next to DB2 , use it as a bridge and give a LAN wire to the DB2
does this work ok ? i mean i'll have internet using wifi + wires taken from R1 and R2 ?

ZEX do you mean a wireless router next to DB2?
BTW i'm having a similar case but still didnt do anything about it :p too lazy !!

I'm lazy too but my dad is forcing now :D
yeah so each DB will have one router next to it, one router is normal , the other is bridge
i never did a bridge thing before , but i don't think it's complicated , is it ?

yes you have to buy 2 units (BD15 each)one connected to the router and the other to the DB, but when i asked the shop owner he said that the signal might be weak if the router is connected upstairs and far from the receiving unit.
ZEX: to have a strong connection signal do the bridge thing with a wifi extender, i did the same setup without ant problems

Otto , e7em i just wanted to see if there's a better solution :D that's it :D i already mentioned my solution looking for a more efficient one.
Z0Sick and Bushaheen , Thanks guys , i'll check the shop, in case i didn't like the idea of being tied to DB (what if i want to connect other devices there? if i have a bridge it'd be more flexible) then i'll just buy a router and that's it

.
Product Overview:
Unlike adding a traditional access point to your network to expand wireless coverage, the Wireless-G Range Expander does not need to be connected to the network by a data cable. Just put it within range of your main access point or wireless router. It is designed to "bounce" signals into those distant, reflective corners and hard-to-reach areas where wireless coverage is spotty and cabling is impractical. This "relay station" or "repeater" approach helps to build a wireless infrastructure and save wiring costs.

the problem :
we have two dreambox's and one phone line for internet
DB1 is connected to a router on the second floor
DB2 is the one i need to connect with the same network , so that i use it fully
but i dont wanna run a wire between those two floors and all over the walls
the wifi signal reaches the middle of the two floors , so i have a solution already for this which is a wifi extender and it works great
now what i'm thinking of doing is ,,, i buy a router , put it next to DB2 , use it as a bridge and give a LAN wire to the DB2
does this work ok ? i mean i'll have internet using wifi + wires taken from R1 and R2 ?
This works.
Another option can be by having a powerline network adapters one for the Wifi Router downstairs and one for the Wifi router upstairs (which can be put next to your DB2) and use wire connection.
This way you can have signal all over the house and can connect all your DBs
I haven't used these powerline solutions so I haven't experienced their limitations but it worked fine for a friend who has it :) Basically there are few requirements for it which you can search in google

That will not work cause all the bridged PCT and RCT adaptors which will need to be installed parallel to the router line in and line out to AUX phase.... will eventually cause magentic flux interference between ports!

Thanks, but it's late now , i already bought a Linksys Router so that i load DD-WRT on it to make it work as a Client Bridge
btw i returned the SMC coz in order to make it work as a bridge i needed another smc router , i got the Linksys WRT54GL instead.

what about RUG and PUBX plugs when we put then on DIO more the TRQ will be disabled automatically !

Then who were you asking? Please answer so we don't mis-understand you!
well like he said i posted on a public forum, and since i pointed at him asking if he finished school rather than saying did you, i assumed it's clear that i'm pointing my question to the other viewers of this topic. ok i have another question for you then:
How many electrical engineers does it take to change a light bulb.
none, they'll all talk and b*tch and no one will do the actual work.

Unbreakable
June 16th, 2010, 02:10 PM
the problem :
we have two dreambox's and one phone line for internet
DB1 is connected to a router on the second floor
DB2 is the one i need to connect with the same network , so that i use it fully
but i dont wanna run a wire between those two floors and all over the walls
the wifi signal reaches the middle of the two floors , so i have a solution already for this which is a wifi extender and it works great
now what i'm thinking of doing is ,,, i buy a router , put it next to DB2 , use it as a bridge and give a LAN wire to the DB2
does this work ok ? i mean i'll have internet using wifi + wires taken from R1 and R2 ?
there is something called network over electricity, you get two devices, plug them and you got a network...simple

what if the electricity upstairs is seperated from downstairs? then it would be impossible to use this method.

Plus it costs a lot
and it's VERY SLOW
and you can expect some degredation of speed if you powerline connection has to cross your circuit breaker box
Unbreakable

for DreamBox you don't need speed
as well as for a two floors house all you need is 3 face electricity
no expensive
ZEX

You're right ahmedo , for DB it's enough but expensive and slow at the same time , why not take the chance and spend less , still maintain high speeds ? (in case i need to use internet downstairs)
