iOS > Android
That's a negative sir,
Android>iOS x10
i've used both plenty.. IMO apples restrictiveness and "apple way" mentality will be it's downfall
Android market is in a major boom right now and growing very rapidly..
and in many ways has reached and surpassed the apple devices... both hardware and software wise...
as for the Galaxy 2 it looks very promising.. it has absolutely destroyed the benchmarks and the performance looks outstanding...
my only concern is with all this mobile crunching power with dual core proc. etc.. how will it effect battery life? I hope they have some very good power management Software...

what good is performance if u dont have a proper app store to provide a wide variety of apps to implement the "performance" you have from a "cell" phone?
i mean seriously, i've compared both neck-to-neck i used my iPhone and my friends Galaxy and its utterly gibberish! im not kidding you cant even create a contact without going through a dozen steps. not to forget that u have to press the damn thing a million times for it to realize that u gave it a command !
and besides, what restrictivness? what do u want to do IN A CELL PHONE ? create a webpage? build a house maybe? this is a cell phone not a job :p
Ottoman
April 26th, 2011, 09:44 AM
I can't argue with you about the apps.. Hands down apple store has more.. (I think it's approx 3x as much) but to me a cell phone isn't supposed to be another gameboy.. when I first got my iphone I installed tons of apps and whatever.. a few days later they were all Meh... so what I can pour a fake beer, or play a flute with my butt, or watch a jiggly man bounce around or make light saber noises etc.. I ended up deleting all but maybe 5 of them... other games like resident evil and stuff were graphically good.. but a touch interface for first and third person shooters is TERRIBLE... i don't remember how many times I died in Assasins creed cuz my thumbs slip too far away from the virtual joystick and stop working...
but u don't need an iphone for that, u might as well go buy an iPod touch for 1/3 the price and have a pocket app machine thats thinner and lighter with the same screen...
as for the usage of the of the phone, its more about what ur used to.. I find the iOS too dumbed down for me, with no advanced features or info.. and often times things are buried 3-4-5 menus deep...
pressing a million times thing..
the galaxy is more of an "advanced" users phone.. for those that love putting custom roms and firmwares and stuff like that... my phone is day and night different from when I got it outta the box...
the community encourages open source and home brew and experimentation, they're not constantly in a battle with dev team and apple dev to block and attack each other and limit what u can do..
and my phone is 100x better cuz of it.. so much snappier responsive and quadrant scores have doubled...
what I meant by restrictions.. its more about you have to do it the Apple way or buzz off...
to use and manage my galaxy I don't need any samsung software bloating up my machine...
with iPhone my pet peeves are:
No Avi/divx support.. LAZIM u convert to MP4/MOV lame unsupported formats...
no flash support in a world where everyone uses flash
I'm paired with 1 "home" machine.. for all my media management music etc etc
Apple doesn't let you use your device as a removable storage ON PURPOSE, I have a 32GB phone or 64GB touch, and I wanna plug it in and use it as flash memory.. can I? noooooooo they don't want u to
you can only copy content ONTO the device, not OFF of the device.. (hey man that's a cool song/movie/etc let me copy them on to my PC, sorry NCD)
Non standard cable connector
non user replacable battery
no memory card slot
bluetooth blows (on purpose)
Apple has to a very strict and limited Approval list for app developers... and the apps u develop cannot compete with apples native apps.. (u can't make an email program better then Mail, etc)
which then means you have to jailbreak/hack your phone if you want things that you should of always had, like a file manager, command line, ssh support, quick drop menu, I remember when I had to jailbreak my phone just to put a background on the bloody thing, even ring tones require bloody work arounds!
as with many apple products.. their marketing engine is so powerful, they convince ppl they NEED it..so many ppl run out and buy one cuz its cool and hip and trendy... a month later they realize what a mistake they made, or they don't know how to use it..
with the galaxy:
Many apps are multi platform now.. and many times Apps that are paid for on iphone, are FREE for droid.. e.g. Angry birds.. fruit ninja etc
Standard connector, (I carry 1 cable for my BB and Galaxy and my car charger and wall charger works for them both)
FLASH SUPPORT (you have no idea how nice this is) I have a REAL browser on my phone, embedded youtube vids work, banners, flash sites, I can even stream tv shows from my fave sites on my phone
my media management is as follows: plug in my universal micro USB cable.. open my computer, drag and drop the movies and music and pics into the folders I want, unplug and walk away.. if my friend wants my songs, or I see songs on his PC that I like, and want to add to my list, I just plug it in, repeat the process... I don't need to Download 150mb iTunes and pair my device and then lose my content and stuff...
so what happens when i'm sitting in a car with a friend and there are several large files on his Galaxy that i want on mine? NOT A PROBLEM, we open the file manager on his phone, copy it to the external memory card, pull it out, stick it in mine, copy it to my internal memory using my file manager, and hand it back to him.. no reboots required. simple.
I Admit I used to be an iPhone fanboy as well.. I had a 3GS for over a year... it bricked on me 1 times too many.. and I sold it for peanuts, and bought the galaxy...
my GF has a iphone 4 cuz she got brain washed by all the hype.. and hates the phone with a passion.. she sees all the things I can do with my phone, and asks me to do it for her.. and I can't..
when she goes to the gym, she likes to watch TV shows... she used to have a galaxy tab, and would drag and drop them, and then take them with her while doing cardio...
U know what I had to do to get that for her on Iphone?
1.) jail break it
2.) install VLC (cuz apple banned it from apple store since Jan)
3.)install openSSH on the phone (also banned)
4.)install WinSCP on PC
5.)SSH INTO THE PHONE OVER WIRELESS!
6.)Browse thru all the hidden folders to find the media folder
7.)copy the files
and guess what? because of all the encryption over head with SSH, it copies at 1MB per sec... thats right.. it takes ~12 mins to copy 1 movie across :S
FAWK THAT ISH!
Now you understand what I mean by restricted? :p
don't get me wrong.. apple OSX is great and I see it's merits.. and im looking at buying a new MBP and am very curious to try Lion on it but when it comes to their hand helds and iOS... *GROAANNN*
oh and p.s. sorry for the rant :D (can you feel the harra?)

I understand ur point of view, but there's a solution to everything.
There are a million replacment apps for standard Apple built-in applications. For example, i dont use Safari to browse on my iPad, i use a free app called Perfect Browser cuz it allows me to use the tabs feature which Safari lacks. I use cinXplayer to watch my transferred movies, free as well.
Cant play flash embeds? no problem. There is another browser app which converts it to HTML5. (cant recall the name)
U do stuff the old fashioned way, while there are other solutions to ur issues which doesnt require u to jailbreak it.

agreed, I'm fine with an OS only comparison as well
but reason I chose Galaxy S vs iphone4 is because they're hardware is VERY similar, and it evens the playing field.. since droid is so multiplatform, it's not fair comparing a low end el cheapo hand held with poor hardware, to iphone

Otto , tell me more reasons to get samsung

like I said, the droid in general and the galaxy S community specifically.. love home brewing and cooking up stuff..
what I mean by that is, ur not bound to OEM software, many developers out there make custom roms, custom firmwares, combining the best of diff versions and putting them together... for example I was using the Gingerbread keyboard (ver 2.3) on my 2.2 OS for a long time now,
because it is a linux based platform, ppl even manipulate the way it fetches and caches data in the memory, and have found ways to make it faster and snappier...
there is entire forums dedicated to it's development, and it's all open source and free...
there's full blown games like Real football 11 that is 100's of megabytes.. to worms and angry birds etc..
to little apps that make the button lights snooze and glow when u have a prompt...
we have animated backgrounds that u can interact with..
for example behind your icons u can have an acquarium with 3D fish.. when u tap on the glass u can feed them and they will swim to the top of the tank for food..
or you can have a scenery view, that changes from sunrise to morning to sunset to night depending the time of day it is..
honestly there's so much to it..
I know ppl who were unhappy with their experience because they didn't know WHAT to do with their device... and the potential it has.. then sold it...
Apple is great and dumbing down everything for u and making it a very linear experience...
apple is like playing Devil may cry or god of war.. there's usually only one path to follow, you can see big fancy backgrounds but u can't go there...
Droid is like Fallout 3 or Morrowind... you can wander where ever u want whenever u want. and do as much or as little as u like..
some ppl like that kind of experience.. some ppl don't...
it depends on what kinda user you like to be...
it has alot of "neat" built in features that are like "ahhh why didn't anyone think of that before" and stuff as well...
but so far i've converted alot of ppl to droid and they're very happy with their experience too...
next time I bump into you i'd be happy to give u a walk thru

Device by Device comparison, between the Galaxy S2 and the iphone , there's no comparison at all!
Dual Core 1.2 Ghz 1GB RAM, amazing Graphics Processor unit!
Latest android OS, full office suite! free NAV (turn by turn nav), latest google maps, latest youtube. Full voice command feature! eg, you can send a text msg to a contact wihout pushing ANY button! Using your phone as a flash drive. Full flash, html5, divx, etc.
Data speed upto 21mbps for HSPDA (this is to me is a killer feature when i compare it with other dual core androids)
DLNA support for multimedia sharing to any DLNA device (most tvs have DLNA).
HDMI output for full HD mirroring of all contents in your phone.
lots of shortcuts, gestures, and motion commands.
thinnist phone in the market, very lightweight and 4.3" AMOLED 2 plus (best screen in the market and very bright)
iphone 4 is very outdated compared to this, there's a rumor of iphone 4S that's basically iphone 4 with larger screen and a faster processor.

But as Tyrant mentioned, it all boils down to personal preference. I haven't tried the Samsung but it does look like a decent, versatile phone! I'm happy with my iPhone, my only complaint would be that it's too fragile... I chipped a corner of it a week after I got it!

This what was worrying me and hate in the I phone
Battery life :)
The story of the Galaxy S II's battery life cannot be told without returning to its luscious screen. Being an OLED panel, the 4.3-inch display here doesn't use one single backlight as LCD screens do, and instead only illuminates the pixels that are needed to actively display content. This is the reason why it can generate truer blacks than any backlit panel, but it also permits the user to optimize battery life by doing such things as switching to a darker wallpaper or reading ebooks against a black background. We didn't actually bother with such tweaks, we were too busy exploring every one of the myriad features and options on this phone, but the option's there as an extra dimension of obsessive control if you care for it. As to the Galaxy S II's actual endurance, we found it highly competitive with the latest batch of Android phones. After 20 hours, half of which were filled with the above tinkering and exploration, we managed to drag the Galaxy S II down to 15 percent of its original charge. This was with our usual push notification suppliers, Gmail and Twitter, running in the background and while constantly connected to our WiFi network.
thanks greep el dar

last i checked 4 days ago.. it was 310 bd($820) for the 16gb and 360($950) for the 32GB... and this is after they've been out a year.. they used to cost much more...
a sim sim costs 2bd.. not 400... the initial investment is negligable... apples and oranges
if u lose your sim sim number u wont care, u'll go out and buy another one.. no loss..
now lose your iphone on the other hand.... pwwnnddddd
when my 3GS got bricked the last time and i couldn't use it anymore I was a very unhappy camper to say the least...
well i didnt get mine from Bahrain :p got it on its launch date when i was in Geneva last summer. bahrain agents are ... well u know what they are :p
anyhow, what im trying to point here is that if u have a simsim number since its launch in bahrain and kept topping it up every now and then till-date, you would end up paying more than you can imagine. its not the case of investments in devices, im talking about a concept here which is very similar. and topping up ur iTunes account doesnt have anything to do with a device's loss. now on the other hand if u lose a simsim number which u just refilled with 30BD... pwwwwwwnd ... all ur money is lost :) see what i mean?

Ahhhhh of course! u can, when I bought my galaxy it didn't have arabic support either... (the market demographic is small in comparison, so they usually rush to get the hardware out and then add arabic later)
i'm telling you the phone can be modded in a million ways, u don't think arabic language support is one of em? :P
what they mean is "outta the box khaleeji spec" will be may...
but if you want a english version you can get it sooner

I used to think the same as you, going from the iphone to galaxy, u think it feels Cheap... but after awhile you appreciate how much lighter it is...and easier to carry around..
weight reduction is a big convenience.. plus makes it much easier to make the battery replaceable and external memory, plus swapping out covers etc.
and I'd rather cut costs on the plastic body, if it means better hardware where it matters...
my galaxy was 240bd.. 50% less then the iphone... when I saw how much money I was saving..I wasn't complaining it had a plastic back after that :p

Have some questions..
1. How easy is backing up and restoring a Droid device?
2. After a restore, at what state would the device be? (e.g on the iPhone it's a 100% restore, including a half written message, emails and all)
3. What's the battery life like on the devices? (usage in hours)
4. Steps needed to conduct an OS upgrade?
5. How stable is the OS? (how often does it hang, And Yes it does hang)
6. Is the OS open to SSH?
7. Does the OS support application / folder management?
FYI, iPhone is Android OS compliant

1 and 2.) an app called Titanium backup (free of course) lets you do a full bkp/restore.. the backup is done on the device it self and backed up to the mem card, letting u format/partition/etc your main as u see fit, after u install the OS, re-install TiBkp and then restore ur save state
3.) I charge my phone every 2 days out of convience.. but I've had it go 55+hrs on me.. ( I never killed it) YMMV of course.. Blue tooth,wifi,3g,brigthness,gaming etc, all factor in... if I turn Data off, and goto bed, in the morning the batt only loses 1% or so..
4.) you DL the Image of choice.. whether u want official release, homebrew, leaked beta etc (about half the size and less.. of iphone's current os's I dled 4.3.2 and it was 666mb :O) and you boot your phone in Download mode, plug in the microUSB cable and use an app to push the OS onto your phone.
5.)Depends on your version, apps occasionaly crash, but the actual OS freezing and requiring a hardreboot, VERY rare)
6.)yes
7.)yes the OS has a bundled File manager, that lets you cut/copy/create/del/rename etc etc as you like (I used it in my file sharing example earlier) of course the market place has other alternatives as well...
note: by default Root access is disabled on the phone so n00bs dont go breaking it and complaining.. once root access is enabled(easy) then the phones capabilities are hugely widened (advanced users of course)

the youtube thing is annoying.. I agree... I believe it has to do with memory management.. it doesn't keep it cached in the memory and even with browsing.. if u leave ur last page open and kill the browser.. if u open it 5-10mins later its ok.. but come back to the page after several hours.. it'll remember the URL, but it will refetch the page...
as for Data.. if your watching Youtube in HQ it will suck hella bandwidth... I believe the vids are in 480p (sure feels like it) ... I also found that out the hardway..
I usually reserve HQ for WiFi.. and use normal quality for my poor data plan...
you can also check in the settings.. to only update apps on wifi

This is an issue with some droid phones, basically they dont support device to device sharing or Adhoc connections / networks.
their is a workaround which basically involves rooting your phone (droids version of jail break) and then replacing one of the system files related to the wireless function of the phone.
Phoenix, for as to why you want to browse the internet and talk on the phone and the same time,...i cant speak for Otto but for me this function is good coz i use my phone as a modem alot, so while hooked up and downloading i have 2 issues:
1. i want to be able to receive my calls
2. i dont want my connection to break (if i'm downloading for example)
But this feature is nothing new tho, my old xperia x1 has this function.

I use FB and Gtalk, gmail, and the market/applanet.. thats about it..
the OS supports push, it depends on the what the developer wants..
but since the OS uses real time multi tasking, and not "fake" multitasking like on iOS.. I think developers prefer Pull, as it is real time, and not delayed

OK here we go...................some people might not like what i'm about to say, but I’ve had my fair shear of this device……….
When compared to other OS’s besides the iOS then yes its way up there on the charts, but when compared to the iOS it’s a completely different matter.
Droid:
1. OS unstable (crashes and multiple daily re-boots required)
2. High Vulnerability to data loss (encountered data loss e.g messages, call log, contacts in another words everything)
3. Battery life is good with 3g turned On.
4. Love the built in slide up menu when receiving calls
5. Supports OS update wirelessly from device, without the need for a Computer connection.
6. Backend OS structure / code is a mess (spaghetti code, down side of open source)
7. Updating OS is a nightmare (good luck trying to find a good working copy of OS files)
8. Love the widgets.
9. Every re-boot, app icons change locations of main screens.
10. Very Very Very Very Very Very data hungry. (it just eats away at your data package like a starving animal)
11. Anti Virus is a must have app.
12. Love the top built in pull down menu (just like the add-on SB settings on the iPhone)
Over all I personally don’t recommend

U know you bought the wrong phone right faisal? 9000 stuff doesn't work properly on the 9003.. (hence why I said pwnd earlier in the thread)
I think that's the cause of most of your problems when u were trying to push new 9000 stuff on it..
I have 4-5 friends with 9000's we don't have any of the issues.. (1,2,7,9)

Ok guys.......
From what i c is..... We need to invest on the latest device in order to meet (note: not even exceed) a 2 year old iDevice features / functionality.
guys galaxy S i9003 for sale ..... PM me if you're interested...... Device is less then a week old.....
If anyone is interested in experiencing the Droid world, this device would be a great starting point. You wouldn’t want to spend 340BD on a Samsung Galaxy SII and then regretting the investment.

here we go again......................Droid testing with respect to iOS
Droid 2.2.1 running on Samsung Galaxy s i9003 (stock OS, not even rooted)
iOS 4.1 running on iPhone 3gs (jailbreak applied / unlock)
Conducted another test between the Droid and iOS
Pre Test setup:
1. Managed to get both devices at 40% battery juice (ok fine, iOS had 38% and Drois was 41%)
2. Both OS's had a batelco sim plugged in with data configured
3. Both had 3g switched on.
4. Both had WiFi switched on.
5. Both had Facebook running
6. Placed the devices side by side (locked, standby, sleep mode. Whatever you want to call it)
7. Went to sleep for an hour.
8. OOOppppssss missed to mention, Alarm was set on the iOS.
Outcome:
1. An hour later Alarm rings. (don't forget, been pre set on iOS)
2. Snooze was clicked.
3. 10 Min's later Alarm goes of again.
4. Snooze was clicked.
5. 10 Min's later Alarm goes of again.
7. Deside to wake up.
8. Unlocked the 2 devices.
9. Guess what.......take a guess........come on u think ..... cant be too hard......U CAN DO IT
10. Droid Shows battery percentage at 9% (in fact, the device is re-charging as we speak)
11. iOS battery life was still at 38%.
12. Droid WiFi data usage increased form 1571 to 1580 (an increase of 9MB's) while 3g data usage was idling at 389MB's showing no signs of increase.
13. iOS showed zero increase to WiFi / 3g data usage.

this point i have to totally agree with, droid phones consume battery power with a vengence.. i left my tab yesterday with data mode on and waking this morning it went down from 91% to 73%.
honestly at this point, i think i'm gonna skip on the galaxy 2 and just go for the VIVA iphone 4 (30BD package).. the way i see it i get the package i want and the phone is tossed in for free, and should i get the knack to buy the galaxy 2 later down the road it still is doable.

what you forget is android supports all sorts of connection types..
1.) its upto the developers of the specific app to decide how they wanna fetch or push data... not the OS's fault.. (nor is it nazi about it like iOS is) so basically you proved Facebook for iOS is better then Facebook for android (on 2.2)
2.) ur using a version of android thats completely out of date now, u might as well compare 2.2 to iOS 3.x
3.) when u turn wifi on. the droid disables the 3G data connection, (u'll see the icon disapear), dunno about iOS
i have FB and gtalk and what not, my battery lasts 48hrs.. (i recharge end of second night)
even when I kill FB app, the push notifications still prompt me for FB chat or status updates 3adi...

To clarify your points: (points replied within the same sequence of the above post)
--------Start of reply
Don’t recall referencing the handling of different connections
1. E.g Have u heard of the Garbage collector? With mobile devices this is OS controlled and invoked when OS is at idle state. iOS handles that.
2. Have to disagree on that.....Droid is still within the same version like iOS (e.g Droid 2.2.1, 2.3.3 or iOS 4.1, 4.2.1, 4.3.3 as u can see all r the same versions but with different patches / fixes)
3. That is true. I was only equalizing device.
Push / Notification is handled in a completely different manner within the Code.
--------End of reply
Clarification, this was a controlled environment test and those were the findings (that’s all, nothing more nothing less bro).

this sums the whole article well:
It seems somewhat absurd to me that this even has to happen. Yes the Galaxy S2 looks an awful lot like a 3GS, and yes Samsung went back to the drawing board when the iPad 2 was released, but honestly, how many form factors for these devices are there? Hell they're all almost candybar phones now. Tablets by definition look like a slab. It's all a matter of how thick, what color, and screen size you want to implement in the devices. Even most of the processors, and other components in these devices are the same.
Which brings us to the only real defining, and differing aspect of all smartphones, and tablet devices, the software. Unless Samsung is running a copy of iOS then this shouldn't really matter. Obviously, Samsung isn't playing copy-cat like the Chinese factory variants that appear in droves over seas, so whats the big deal?
At the end of the day Apple is still going to be one of Samsung's largest customers, and Samsung one of Apple's largest component suppliers. The best of frenemies.
better not to bite the hand that feeds u I say..
and apple is famous for suing anybody that even farts in their direction..
the question is will they win?

the store owners kept telling me "samsung kechra, droid kechra! why do u want this bad phone?! buy an Iphone!" etc
i'm like no I want Galaxy S keyfee...
now a year later, ppl have realized that its a good phone.. and they are flying off the shelves

Samsung’s Galaxy SII is all over the blogs for achieving the sales numbers of 3 million in 55 days. So we decided to do a quick look up of the sales that iPhone 4 garnered in the last year.
As announced by Jobs in a press conference, Apple’s iPhone had managed to breach the mark of 3 million sales just under a month. Add to it the interesting fact that the iPhone 4 has been ruling the charts for the highest smartphone sales in the UK since its release. If you do the math, it comes to about 11 months on the top. Its only this month that the Samsung Galaxy SII has managed to dethrone the iPhone 4 in sales.
Apple had managed 1.7 million sales in a weekend and the sales were only 3 million in a month. That was certainly a sharp drop in the sales, which was attributed to the supply constraints. So it would be very interesting to see how long the Galaxy SII can reign at the top of the charts.

I take that back.
I'll wait for the iphone 5. It will probably come around eid time before the launch of Samsung galaxy s3 early 2012.
iPhone5 will be launched to compete with Samsung Galaxy S3, the Galaxy S2 is for iphone4.
Agree?

Got mine 2 days ago from lulu in Aali for 259 bd 16 gigs
The user interface and the market needs time to catch up with what apple got to offer
I really wish if my iphone got some of what the galaxy features as amoled screen+same processor or better and a full hd cam+ some cool things from the android user interface.
After all the galaxy is very light & Nice phone to be honest and I'm loving it can't wait until I update it to support arabic.

From what I have read, the Galaxy s2 uses up battery like crazy and it barely lasts you a day and if you want to save up battery power you have to remove the screen brightness, live wallpaper, wifi etc. There goes your Super Amoled screen!
They say that the iphone will have better battery power.
I need a phone that I can enjoy without having to plug it in the charger all the time.

so are you saying that if a user had his iphone jai-broken and had no problems down the line (with enhanced notifications etc.), he would be having if not the best, at least one of the best smart phone experience the market has to offer ? :thinking2

better depends on perspective, i've had ample play time with the iphone4, galaxy, galaxy tab, BB etc.. each has it's stong and weak points but to say the iphone is teh roxX0rs my b0xXoRs just isnt right.
the biggest advantage of the iphone is that its simple, its a simple phone for simple people..

Is Apple slitting Samsung’s throat with orders stoppage?
Samsung Mobile’s chief technology office Omar Khan is leaving the company for greener pastures, it was revealed yesterday. Khan is leaving for Citi where he will be responsible for their mobile initiatives. The unexpected departure arrives at a time when Samsung is chasing Nokia to become the world’s leading phone vendor and fighting Apple’s copycat accusations of stealing the design of iPhone’s hardware, software, packaging and even marketing communications.
As it turns out, Samsung may have already lost orders from Apple, its biggest buyer, as a result of the growing rift. The Globe and Mail reports that Apple might end its relationship with Samsung by taking their five billion dollar a year in electronics parts orders elsewhere. For example, Apple could order NAND flash from Toshiba, Micron and Hynix Semiconductor and mobile processors from Intel and TSMC. Samsung also supplies Apple with LCDs for computers and iPads. Samsung’s financial filings provide clues to its relationship with Apple.
