The Beginnings of the Corvette L 88
As the horsepower and cubic inches race escalated in 1965,
Zora Duntov knew that it would be only a matter of time before he
had to place the Mark IV big block engine in his beloved Corvette.
With the availability of the Cobra with either a street or full race version of Ford's 427 side oiler early in '65, the decision was made for the option of the big block Chevrolet engine for the Corvette.
The 396 cubic inch version was available with 425 horses
in the Spring of '65. But it was not enough!!
In order for the Corvette to remain the King, it was necessary
for it to have a better power to weight ratio than the 427 racing Cobra. More horse power was needed. In the fall of'65, a special
high performance engine code named L-88 was developed, but it needed to be tested to see if it would be a worthwhile option for the Corvette. As mentioned in the Grand Sport article, the first assembly line built Corvette with the L-88 was delivered to Roger Penske. Special care was given to this red car in St. Louis, and at the end of the assembly line, the car was met by it's first driver...... Dick Guldstrand!
As some assembly line workers stood by, Dick fired up the car
and found that it was content to idle at 1500 RPMS. It was winter in St. Louis, and without a heater in this Corvette, Dick found that some blankets were necessary for the drive to Pennsylvania and Roger Penske's shop.
With it's early introduction, the L-88 was originally rated at 425 horsepower.
Duntov completed the homologation papers for this engine and for
some other competition modifications such as cowl induction
hood modification, oil coolers and fender modifications to name a few.

All required preparation work was performed at Roger's shop in
Newton Square Pennsylvania, and after some shoveling out of snow, the team headed down to Daytona for the 1966 running of the 24 Hours of Daytona.
Roger was able to strike a one race only sponsorship deal with Sunoco, so with their help a good pit crew was available as well. Sunoco 260 was the fuel of choice.
http://www.madwheels.com/articles/corvette-l88/day66red.jpg
To make a long story short..... after being placed under the microscope of the Daytona inspectors, after the hassle of getting the Sunoco 260 into a track which was dominated by Pure petroleum, after rear-ending a slower car
at night and tearing off half the front end, this first L-88 managed to finish first in it's GT class!!
This accomplishment so impressed Sunoco that it extended it's
sponsorship for another race .... The 12 Hours of Sebring!
Now it would be a two car team, for this L-88 would be matched up
with one of the last Grand Sports (see last month for details).
Duntov was so impressed that he gave the order for more L-88
Corvettes (425 HP) to be made available to "special friends"
who would race this new motor on road racing courses and drag strips in 1966. He was hoping that all the bugs could be worked out before the L-88 became a regular production option (RPO) for the 1967 model year.
Here we find the L-88 in the Sunoco blue and yellow at practice for Sebring 1966. The new colors were Rogers idea to impress Sunoco executives for future sponsorships (Camaro and Lola). Things went much more smoothly at Sebring for this Corvette, the race was uneventful and the team went home with a 1 ST in GT again!!!
Roger soon received news about the new Camaro and it's Z/28 option, so the Corvettes would soon be old news at his shop as he prepared for the upcoming Trans Am series in the SCCA with the Sunoco Camaros. The L-88 Corvette passed hands to George Wintersteen who campaigned it at Sebring 1967. George managed a 2nd place finish
in GT behind a'67 L-88 driven by Don Yenko and Dave Morgan who claimed 1 st.
http://www.madwheels.com/articles/corvette-l88/4.jpg
The L-88 proved to be a world class winner it's first year out and it would continue with it's winning ways for six more years. These mid year Corvettes had a top speed of about 172 MPH. Duntov knew that with the improving sports racers of the sixties, huge improvements were seen each season......
huge enough to create instant obsolescence for last year's winners. The L-88 needed to be improve and evolve.
A sleeker, more aerodynamic body style would be needed
for increased top speed and improved handling. All these would soon come.

'69 Camaro ZL1
Sober outside except for the induction hood and the twin exhaust, the engine bay of the ZL1 was a frightening sight for most muscle warriors. This was the most powerful Chevy offered for the public.
The nastiest street-machine Chevy ever offered, this engine the ZL1 was a 427 which was underrated at 430 bhp. Actually it had over 500, making it the most powerful engine on muscledom. The car had full 5 year/ 50000 miles warranty and was fully street legal. In the standard configuariont it turned low 13s. With appropriate tuning it got in 11.6 at 122 mph!! All this had a price, and very high indeed. The engine alone cost 4100$ and pushed the price to a Star Trek level of 7200$. In fact only 69 were built and 30 remained unsold until the early 70s.

2002 CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1
http://www.dealsonwheels.com/database/cars/000188-200309-000011_4big.jpg
2002 was the final production year for the Camaro. This particular Camaro is one of 69 produced in 2002 by GMMG to commemorate the Legendary ZL1 Camaro produced in 1969. The 1969 Camaro ZL1 came from the factory with a 427 Aluminum Small Block V-8 engine. They were amazing cars and there were only 69 of them built in 1969. This particular 2002 ZL1 Supercar is one of 31 phase III packages that has a Aluminum Block 427 V-8 engine in it. The motor is refered to as a C-5R producing an amazing 600+ HP and it is backed up by a 6 speed manual transmission. The color of this car is Navy Blue Metallic with custom White leather interior. There are no other ZL1's built to the same specs as this one, therefore it is 1 of 1. Other options include 4:10 rear end gears, 18" Cragar wheels mounted on Z-rated radial tires, electronic exhaust by-pass (Cut-Out), Custom ZL1 stripe package, ZO6 Corvette Brakes & Rotors, and signatures under the hood from many other ZL1 car owners including Helen Gibb who's husband Fred originally placed the order in 1969 with Chevrolet to make these cars a reality. 1969 ZL1's are going for $200,000. to $350,000. The 2002 ZL1's are sure to become highly valued collectibles as well.
